An Open Letter To Those Around Me In The Gym

Dear people that happen to be in the gym at the same time as me,

As a lifelong runner who has spent years avoiding the gym in favor of keeping my skinny runner bod, going to the gym is something relatively new to me.

But as someone who is new to the gym, I am just now gaining a foothold in the vast culture of fitness.

And so, I must speak in honor of all others still slightly intimidated by the atmosphere in the gym.

To the screamers: I don't care how much weight you are lifting, how swole you are, or how often you inject steroids into your system. Shut up, and stop disrupting others around you. It's rude and careless to be so loud and inconsiderate towards those around you. I understand that not all people with serious gains are like this. And to you guys I give mad props. However, for everyone else, this has got to stop. People like you make me never want to go to the gym.

To the wannabe fitness instructors: STOP! I don't care if my form is slightly off. I am new to the gym so my form will likely not be perfect. But that is for me to discover on my own. So please, get over yourself and stop assuming that everyone needs your piece of advice. I ONLY NEED HELP IF I ASK FOR IT!

To the people who won't stop talking to me: Go away. I am in the gym to workout. Not to interact with anything other than some free weights and machines. I suggest you do the same.

To those random naked old men in the locker rooms: Get out! I have never understood why there always seems to be at least one disgusting old dude confidently strutting naked around the locker rooms of the gym. Are you guys actually here to work out, or are you just here to scar people for the rest of their lives? I never actually see any of you working out, so I'll assume the later.

To the gym regulars that mind their own business: I love you. Thank you for not bothering me while I am working out. Thank you for not letting your massive body shape get to your head. Thank you for just doing you and letting me do me.

To the other new people in the gym trying to make a positive change in their lives: More power to you. I respect you a whole lot more than the arrogant meatheads on steroids. I want more people like you and me to feel comfortable going to the gym without being bothered by all the arrogant tools who feel like they own all the pieces of equipment available. Just go in with a plan and execute it without worrying about your surroundings.

Sincerely,

New guy in the gym

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
