An Open Letter to the High School Senior Choosing a College

College isn't just about your education.

An Open Letter to the High School Senior Choosing a College

A year ago I was making one of the hardest decisions of my life, where to go to college. A year later, I can say that I made the right decision.

It can be so overwhelming choosing where to go to college. The question you are probably most asked is, "Where are you going in the fall?" Answering this over and over to teachers, friends and especially family members is exhausting. I know from experience, that sometimes you just have to bite your lip to hold back having an annoyed attitude. Just know that when people ask you, it is because they care about your future and want you to be successful.

Whether you're choosing a college far away or nearby, you should feel at home when you step on campus. For me, I was set on CNU. I was recruited for their competition cheerleading team and they seemed to have everything I wanted and more. Before my senior year of high school started my dad told me he wanted me to look at Lynchburg College, because he was an alumni. I, being extremely stubborn, did not want to go to Lynchburg because my mind was set. The day came to go on a tour and my dad invited my best friend to come along with us. She had also been looking at other schools.

For me it was love at first sight. I had never felt more comfortable and welcomed to a strange place. Everything seemed perfect and that feeling of the first time I came here, is something so joyous, I wish all of you have it. Go with your gut. Choose the place that will make you happiest. Of course other things come into factor such as majors, sports, and distance, but what is most important is that you feel at home.

Decision day is coming and I am sure you are overwhelmed. Just relax and know that in a year from now, you will be somewhere, in a new place, and with new friends. College is most importantly about obtaining an education, but it is also about growing. The friendships you make will be amazing and the memories you make with them will last a lifetime.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
