To My College Friends Over The Summer

Summer is a different time of the year... because I'm not with you all.

The fact that it is already May is beyond me. I feel like August was yesterday; the month where we finally reunited on campus after summer break. Well, it looks like the waiting period (aka summer) for this reunion is upon us once again. It's a shame that finals put a huge damper on our last week of the semester. Otherwise, I would totally hang out with all of you 24/7.

It's cool being from different parts of the country when we're all together on campus. We compare and contrast where we grew up with each other. We learn not just more about each other, but more about fellow Americans who don't have the same backgrounds as ourselves. However, when we all pack up our cars and (for some of us) head to the airport, we just wish we lived in the same neighborhood.

Just before we pack up and leave is a painful "goodbye." I hate that word. We usually just tell each other, "See you later," because we will be seeing each other just the next day at the latest. It seems so strange that we go from seeing each other every single day to not seeing each other for months in a row. I will miss all of you. I will reminisce on our memories throughout this past year all summer, everything from our nights out on the town to staying in our dorm rooms. You put up with me when I got too wild in the car as well as helped me eat my large order of pizza. For those friends of mine who were also my roommates, thank you for never judging me. Thank you for listening to half of my phone conversations, for not even flinching at me wearing pajamas in the afternoon, and for telling me that I wasn't going to fail every assignment I had to turn in. I'm going to miss being constantly surrounded by other twenty-year-old girls.

I share these memories all of the time at home. You may have only met my family a couple of times, but they still know you all pretty well (and our posts on social media only increase their knowledge). I wish we could have summer memories together, but I realize that distance and scheduling are two major obstacles to that happening. Oh, well. We will see each other soon, but for now, we'll just have to rely on our epic group text.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
