Males dominate in professional sports, males also dominate when it comes to being sports fans. However, some females are just as diehard fans as some males when it comes to being a sports fan.
This letter is for you, the female who will sit in front of a television every Sunday.
Dear Female Sports Fan,
I know it can be tough sometimes watching a sport and not being taken seriously by your peers. But you are never alone.
Being a sports fan is having passion for something you cannot control. Sure, you can pick your favorite team, you can watch whatever game your cable provider will show you, but you can't control the outcome of a game.
Being a female sports fan is not just about handling a great team win or a tough loss, but it's handling the constant questions coming from other sports fans, usually male sports fans.
Whenever you represent your favorite team there are always questions to follow. Yet, no one ever bats an eyelash when a male walks by in a jersey.
Even though you're a female, it's okay to sit in front of a television all day Sunday and watch the first pregame until the last post game when it comes to football.
It's OK to make a March Madness bracket and root for athletes that are your age.
It's OK to want to catch a foul ball for your birthday.
It's OK to cheer louder than anyone in your section at a hockey game.
We've all been there, it's the beauty of being a sports fan regardless of gender.
But the beauty of being a sports fan shouldn't be dependent on gender. Females should feel comfortable wearing a jersey, or screaming at the TV, or even screaming at a live game.
No male should try and make a female justify why she is a fan of sports.
