Everyone, especially women, has that one category of things that they can't stop buying even knowing they don't need it. Whether it's shoes or handbags, we tend to indulge and over-purchase. For me, it's makeup. And lots of it.
I know it's cliché and everyone has their own version of this story but I swear, I was in love with makeup since my childhood. I sat in the hallway, pretending to give my stuffed animals makeovers. It was ridiculously cute and laughable.
To this day, the first career I can remember aspiring toward was makeup artistry. I dreamed of making it big and doing up the faces of celebrities for award shows. Instead of doing makeup for A-listers, I settle for doing the gorgeous faces of my friends when we go out or any other chance I get.
Since childhood, I've had a reality check but my bank account and Sephora rewards card haven't. I love to keep up with the new products my favorite brands are releasing and what trends in the beauty world. It's fun to see this world of beauty adapt as years go on.
So, why am I so obsessed? Because even if I still haven't perfected my winged eyeliner and don't use bright colors, makeup is an art to me. It's a craft whether, it's on a couture model on a runway in Paris, or simply on me when I'm headed to class.
Men argue that we don't need makeup and that it's faking what we look like. What most of them don't understand is we use it because it's enjoyable. The act of applying makeup itself is therapeutic, especially if you can take your time as you get ready. A lot of us makeup-obsessors realize we don't "need" it. However, it can often be a part of a woman's identity, a signature look. Take Taylor Swift for example, known for her red lips, or the Hollywood-glam theme Megan Fox often utilizes. Katy Perry is known for pushing the limits and being bold. You might not know it, but some of your best friends probably have their own signature look.
On top of all this, makeup boosts our confidence. I'm not at all saying I rely on makeup to make me feel good about myself, but sometimes it helps. I don't wear it all the time. In fact, I'm more likely to go to class without it, but I still love it nonetheless.
I personally don't find anything wrong with buying and loving it. I'm not trying to send the message you need make-up to be or feel beautiful. No one does. Regardless, if it's something you enjoy doing because you find it to be a good time, then you go girl.
Next time you think someone looks or is fake because of the amount of makeup they're wearing, try to take it less seriously and consider the fact they may very well consider it an art.
