On August 28th, during the MTV Video Music Awards, one artist seemingly shocked the whole world by the simplest of things: wearing no make-up. Singer/songwriter, Alicia Keys made a bold move by wearing no make-up to, arguably one of MTV's biggest red carpet events- and hasn't worn any since.
Since she stepped into the music industry in the early 2000's, she has been killin' the game from the start. Alongside her numerous awards for singing, this 35 year old's resume includes acting, producing and philanthropy. So basically Alicia Keys is the ideal human specimen.
Alicia Key's wore no make-up, so what?
I do that every weekend when I bum it, what's the big deal? Well, here's why it matters:
Unlike you and I, she has been in the spot light everyday of her life since she emerged into the music industry. From paparazzi to concerts and photo shoots, her face is no stranger to the media. She has the pressure from everyone to look perfect, and act the part as well.
She has become an inspiration for girls everywhere. Young women see people like the Jenner sisters get non-stop attention. They are conditioned to believe that unnaturally plump lips and a "slim thicc" body is what's expected. Alicia's natural black hair and philanthropy give an example of what a true lady of this century should strive for; real.
Stars go make-up free all the time when they are with family and and running errands. But she took it to the next level by not only going to the VMA's without make-up, but posing make-up free for her new album "Here". She is sticking through with her "nude face" movement, proving that it was not only a one time thing for attention.
Why does it even need to be a movement in the first place? I mean, like I said before, tons of woman go about their everyday lives never putting on make-up and they don't get any recognition for it. Alicia Keys was doing something normal, something a regular person would do and is getting praise and worship as if she invented a new miracle drug.
Unfortunately, society's focus on being outstandingly beautiful ALL of the time leads for simple actions like this to be marked as "heroic" and "brave". While I could put Keys on blast for doing the simplest of things, it's not her fault it got the reaction that it did.
It's people like her that show young girls that it's O.K. to be yourself and go bare. It seems like I see girls younger and younger trying to look... well, older and older. Middle schoolers should be focusing their time on having fun with friends and making new memories. Not baking their faces.
Essentially, I write this article to applaud Alicia's actions. She reinforces a wave of strong women from this century. As someone who spend's more money on make-up than groceries, I can definitely take note from her message, and try to go make-up free more often.
