It's hard to imagine a Washington Capitals' team without their Russian star, Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin has brought an incredible amount of talent to the team in his 10+ years as a Capital. He has been one of the most prolific offensive players in the NHL and just broke Sergei Fedorov's record for most goals scored by a Russian-born NHL player with his 484th goal. As a result, Ovechkin has been deemed one of the best players in NHL history. He is more than that, though, as he has become the face of the Washington franchise.
The fans love him. The players love him. He has proven himself capable of leading this team. While the ultimate prize has still eluded this team, it does not diminish Ovechkin's importance to this team. The passion that Ovechkin brings to the ice is like no other. He is not just a goal scorer - he is a team player. He knows when to give and take. His partnership with Swedish center, Nicklas Backstrom, has chemistry like no other. There's just nothing quite like a two on one with Ovi and Backy.
While goals aren't the only thing Ovechkin can do, they are what he does best. After all, will we ever forget this mind blowing goal that started it all?
Pretty sure that after this, everyone knew that great things were in store for DC. This started years and years of show-stopping goals and classic OT game-winners. Five-time Rocket Richard Trophy winner, Ovechkin has proven to the NHL that he can score goals. As a result, teams have adjusted their defense in an attempt to contain the dynamic Russian. He has found ways to break through, however, and continued to baffle coaches and defensemen for years.
Not only does Ovi make a difference on the ice, but he has made an impact off the ice. With his organization, "Ovi's Crazy 8's," he has provided 2,600 children, soldiers, and their families, with the opportunity to see Caps' games for free, with opportunities to meet him after the game, as well. In addition, he has given generously to many charities and causes throughout DC. Ovechkin's commitment to make a difference in the community and brighten a child's day has given him a special place in the hearts of those who call Washington home.
Overall, while Ovechkin has his fair share of critics, he has risen above the negativity and led the Capitals in years of success as team captain. There is no doubt that Ovechkin will go down in history as one of the most elite players of the NHL. While that is a tremendous feat, the impact that he has made on Washington DC fans and members of the community will leave a lasting memory. Here's to many more years of Ovechkin hockey and, hopefully in the near future, being able to add a Stanley Cup to his list of accomplishments, as well.
