As a senior, with three years of high school under my belt, there are things I wish I would have done differently and activities I would have participated in. With my brother beginning his freshmen year this year, I am sharing some of my high school advice and experience with him so that he can take advantage of things that I didn't and be aware of the things that will be available to him. As I reminisce about my high school years, I have formulated pieces of advice that I would like to share with my brother and all incoming freshmen.
1. EVERYTHING matters
From here on out everything you do has an impact on your future. Many freshmen make the mistake of thinking their first year in high school doesn't really count toward applying for college/employment. Colleges/employers evaluate you based on your high school performance in addition to extra curricular activities. Making silly mistakes early on in your high school career, such as having your phone out in class or having one too many tardies, can exclude you from future opportunities like National Honor Society. Getting good grades, being involved with clubs and other activities, and observing the school rules will put you on the path to success.
2. Challenge yourself
As a high school student you are allowed to pick and choose your own courses, as long as they fit into the credit requirement. Incoming freshmen may be overwhelmed with the amount of courses they are able to choose from and take less challenging classes for fear of failure. Taking more difficult courses can raise your grade point average and make you a more well rounded student. Setting goals and achieving them is also a big part of challenging yourself and leads to personal growth.
3. Don't be afraid to participate
Your freshmen year is a time to make a good impression on your teachers and upperclassmen. Displaying respect, enthusiasm and school pride are the building blocks to a great high school experience. Freshmen who appear disinterested in anything school related are often frowned upon by upperclassmen. Attending school sporting events, participating in school activities and showing interest in the success of peers will set a positive tone your high school life.
4. Live in the moment
Never wish your high school years away because you will never get them back. Don't be that cynical senior who wishes they would have done more in high school. Freshmen year might seem to be unimportant and uneventful, but this is the best year of your life. You have the opportunity to build life long friendships, a strong academic foundation and explore your options for your future.
Freshmen year is an important time to take advantage of all available opportunities that high school has to offer. I hope you can use my experience to make your freshmen year an enjoyable and successful one. Good luck class of 2020!
