9 Things You Tell Yourself Before A New Semester

We often find ourselves saying this before a new semester starts, but often have the same results as the last. These are not unreal expectations, they are totally doable. But as the weeks go by, these end up being pushed back by the college life and everyday distractions. Here are some things that you tell yourself before a new semester starts.

1. I’m going to try harder.

Instead of just talking the talk, try to walk the walk by actually trying you're best. Ask questions, study, go to the library, make study groups, maybe even going to bed early. Take the steps that can help you do your best and focus on school. That is what you're there for, so don't waste your time only doing okay.

2. I'm going to be prepared for class.

That moment when the teacher calls on you and you have absolutely no idea on what is going on. Instead of trying to act like you're searching for the answer or hiding in you're seat, try being prepared for class. The syllabus is the easiest place to look for what to know and you may even impress yourself by being prepared for a change.

3. I'm going to go to the gym every day.

"This semester I'm going to go to the gym every day and get in shape." One of the hardest parts about working out is actually getting to the gym. Make the first step in improving your health and getting in shape. Exercise can help with studying and can be a safe, healthy outlet for the stresses of college.

4. I'll go the library more.

The worst time to go here is during finals week because literally everyone and their mom is there trying to cram a whole semester of work in. The key is to study (at the library) throughout the semester so you don't have to cram as much during finals week. Go to a quiet floor where there are no distractions and you can actually get things done.

5. No more all-nighters.

I'm going to actually study days in advance so I won't have to stay up all night to cram. I always regret not studying in advance each time I pull an all-nighter, but always find myself in the same position. Breaking up the work and putting the time in to study days before add up to a night full of sleep. Sounds like a better option to me!

6. I’m only going to watch one episode of Netflix.

.....8 episodes later and you realize that it's dark outside and you spent the whole day watching Netflix. Those hours of studying are gone, but at least you know what happened in season 3 of your show.

7. I'm going to try and look somewhat nice for class.

You tell yourself that you're going to look like a decent human for class, but when the time actually comes, you end up in sweats looking like a homeless person. Comfy is the new look, right?

8. I'm going to make all my 8 ams.

This is the biggest lie that you tell yourself. Even if you set your alarm, which is half the battle, you just can't seem to leave your bed that early. How do the professors expect you to only miss 2 classes the whole semester? Impossible.

9. I'm not going to spend my money on food.

You try not to spend money on food especially if you have a meal plan but then someone mentions Wawa or Chipotle and it's game over.

We have all heard or thought about these empty promises to ourselves before. Make the change and take the extra steps to improve yourself and your grades. You’re paying all this money so why not take full advantage and actually try to do your best? Take the extra step this semester even if it might suck. This explains it best: “Run the extra mile, it’s never crowded.”

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
