2016 was a rough one, which means that we all have high expectations of 2017 being better. However, if you're anything like most Americans, you're probably already struggling with your New Year's Resolutions. This year, instead of setting strict and difficult to maintain resolutions, try these small lifestyle changes to find happiness all year round.

1. Look For God In Every Situation

With all of our distractions of social media, work, and daily obligations, it's easy to forget that God is the center of our lives. Make time to thank God for the blessings in your life. As you move throughout each day, keep Him close in your mind and heart. Accept that there is a greater plan for your life, and trust that although you may not understand it right now, God is taking care of every situation you experience.

2. Speak More Mindfully

Your words are incredibly powerful. Each time you open your mouth, you have the opportunity to be either uplifting or negative. Before saying anything, ask yourself, "Are my words going to improve the situation, or make it worse? Is what I'm saying necessary or beneficial?" Imagine that every word you speak will shape someone's perception of you. Would you want your legacy to be one of inspiration and positivity, or petty complaining and rude comments? The decision is completely up to you.

3. Spend More Time in Nature

Feel the sun on your skin. Explore new places. Stand in awe of the infinite beauty that humans could never hope to recreate. Not only is being in nature free and a good way to get exercise, it's also been known to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. Don't let bad weather keep you from going outside; if it's raining, grab an umbrella and splash in puddles. Snowing? Bundle up and make a snowman. Life is too short to stay huddled up indoors for 3/4 of the year.

4. Become Closer With Your Parents

Being grown up doesn't mean you can't continue to learn from your parents. These are the people who loved you first and most likely love you the most. If you don't have a great relationship with your parents, let this be the year you change that. Don't allow your busy life to overshadow the ones who have always been there for you.

5. Do Less Harm

The vast majority of people are good. We want peace and love in the world. However, we are all contributing to lots of pain and suffering without even realizing it. In 2017, learn the facts about social injustices such as fast fashion and factory farming. During your next Netflix binge, check out some awesome documentaries including "Cowspiracy," "The True Cost," and "Food, Inc." Being informed is the first step to doing less harm to the earth and other people.

6. Value People

When was the last time you told your best friend how great he/she is? How often do you say "I love you?" There is no such thing as appreciating your loved ones too much. Write letters to the most important people in your life, telling them how special they are. Schedule more time to catch up with those you don't see often. A simple text of encouragement every once in a while could do more for someone than you would ever know.

7. Live Authentically

Just like the rest of the world, you have flaws and imperfections. Instead of allowing these things to cause you stress or insecurity, work on loving them and celebrating them. Stand in front of the mirror once a day and tell yourself everything you are proud of, inside and out. It may be difficult at first, but as time goes on, you will find more and more things to love. Be open to others about these imperfections of yours, as it allows people to better embrace themselves, as well.

8. Be More Spontaneous

Leave gifts for strangers in random places. Turn your phone off for a day. Plan a cheap road trip to a new city. Give compliments. Buy yourself flowers. Run a 5K. Visit new restaurants. Talk to the person next to you in class. Make someone happy every single day. Getting out of your comfort zone is a surefire way to discover new things you love.

You won't be able to control everything that happens this year, but you can control how you react to things and live each day. Make the choice to live intentionally and peacefully, because in the end, happiness is your choice.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
