Alright, listen up! I have been living as a curvy girl (and loving it) since I was about 8 years old. For some reason, people can't seem to get it through their heads that it's possible for a person to be larger and also be confident and happy with themselves.
Here are some things I've heard that have had me fighting to keep my composure:
1. "Have you tried finding an exercise that works for you? The gym isn't necessarily for everyone!"
Just because I'm bigger doesn't mean I've never exercised or don't enjoy it. Plenty of curvy women bust ass in the gym, losing weight just isn't the goal.
2. When a small person says, "Ugh, I'm so fat. I need to diet."
THIS. I am so sick of hearing this come out of beautiful and small ladies' mouths. You have a perfectly fine body, as do I, we need to be proud of them together.
3. "Wow! That actually looks great on you!"
I know it does, that's why I wore it. I look great in everything I wear, that's why I wear what I wear.
4. "Have you ever thought about doing Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig?"
No, because, as hard as it is to believe, I'm quite content with the way I look.
5. "I just worry about your health."
Thanks for caring, but why don't you let my doctor and I take care of that?
6. "You're not even that big."
Save it, I know I am, and I'm not upset about it. Stop trying to make me feel better for something I'm not sad about.
7. "Don't worry, you'll find someone someday!"
Whoa, really?! Gee, thanks! Oh wait, not everyone bases liking other people strictly on appearance. Some people seem to enjoy my personality too!
8. "If you just lost a few pounds, you'd be beautiful!"
News flash! I already am. Whether I gain 100 pounds or lose 10, I'll still be and feel just as beautiful. Because, wait a second, my self worth is determined by me and me alone.
