Halloween is among us, and with the costumes, apple cider, pumpkin patches and decorations comes another thrilling aspect—haunted houses. For my fellow Halloween lovers, here are 10 of the creepiest looking haunted houses that will scare the crap out of you.
1. The Dent Schoolhouse – Cincinnati, Ohio
A former schoolhouse, this place was closed in the 1950s after a cluster of children went missing. Rumors spread that the school had something to do with their disappearances. Basically, creepy old schoolhouse + horrifying discovery in the basement = terrifying haunted house.
2. Warehouse 31 – Pelham, Alabama
Located off a main dirt trail 31, this haunted house is sure to leave you screaming. Old creepy warehouse with alleged spirits of a father and daughter who both died there? Count me in.
3. Woods of Terror – Greensboro, North Carolina
Known as “Purgatory to the spirits and Woods of Terror to humans,” this place will be sure to offer you a good scare. Dozens of spirits haunt these woods after not being given a proper burial post-Great Depression. Their bodies weren’t adequately laid to rest, and neither were their spirits. Spooky.
4. House of Shock – Jefferson, Louisiana
It’s been said this haunted house pays tribute to the old, dark history of New Orleans. Not to mention, this place has been recognized by Maxim, Rolling Stone and The Travel Channel (House of Shock was named The Travel Channel’s “Most Intense Haunted Attraction”). Enough said.
5. PennHurst Asylum – Spring City, Pennsylvania
What began as a facility for mentally and physically disabled in the early 1900s now remains a haunted asylum. The establishment was closed in the 1980s in response to numerous abuse allegations. Basically, American Horror Story: Asylum comes to life.
6. ATROX Factory – Leeds, Alabama
Known as the “largest indoor haunted attraction in the Southeast,” ATROX provides 40,000 square feet of “mind numbing terror.” They also have guest appearances by famous horror film actors, so October 30 and 31, you can see the real Michael Myers. Sounds good to me.
7. Georgetown Morgue – Seattle, Washington
Home of the “Seattle Crematorium Massacre,” this haunted house is on the grounds of an actual morgue. In 1968, nine faculty members were forced into the crematorium by two suspects who still remain unidentified. It’s one of the most horrifying unsolved crimes in Seattle history, and now, you can attend a haunted house right on those grounds. Not scary at all or anything.

8. Sloss Furnace – Birmingham, Alabama
After the death of a man working at the factory, more and more people speculated about an “unnatural presence” at the site. With more than 100 reports of suspected paranormal activity, this place is sure to give you a scare. An old furnace, people going missing, and now a haunted attraction? Perfect.
