With summer on it's last leg, many people, including myself, are ready for fall. During this glorious season the weather cools down, the leaves change and fall, pumpkin-flavored everything will return. It'll also be the prime time to watch any kind of creepy, horror and suspense-filled movies and shows. While it is still technically summer and we're still in the midst of the unforgiving August heat, I have put together a list of horror —
and just generally creepy and weird — TV shows and films, old and new, to get you in the mood for the cooler, creepier season.TV:
1. "Stranger Things"
If you haven't already heard of the new Netflix original show, then please come out of your rock and enjoy the weirdness. "Stranger Things" revels in 80's nostalgia when science fiction was an amazing, cool thing. The show deals with a missing boy, teen angst, a desperate mother (enter the amazing Winona Ryder), weird government labs, monsters, and a strange girl with cool X-Men like powers. Also, the synthy electronic music is irresistible. The entire first season is available on Netflix.
2. "The Walking Dead"
If you're already a fan of AMC's juggernaut of a show "The Walking Dead" then this is a no-brainer...see what I did there? Luckily for TWD fans, such as myself, each new season premiers in October, filling our fall and Halloween season with lots of zombies and gore. Season 7 should come in with record numbers, and while this is nothing new for the show, the Season 6 finale left fans upset, angry and feeling a bit led on and kind of screwed. Be that as it may, I have no doubt that the Season 7 premier will bring in huge numbers and keep us all coming back for me like we have been since 2010.
3. "Fear The Walking Dead"
"Fear The Walking Dead," the stand alone prequel to "The Walking Dead," returned to feed fan's need for zombies on August 21. The second half of Season 2 of the show takes us with the now separated characters across the border into Mexico. Critics are already giving the second half and the second season as a whole, rave reviews. Whether you're watching to get your zombie fix until TWD premiers in October, just a fan of FTWD, or a fan of both the shows, you won't want to leave it out of your fall watch list.
4. "American Horror Story"
Another hugely beloved show to watch, if not binge-watch, while getting hyped for fall is the fantastic American Horror Story. Since 2011 fans have enjoyed the horror anthology show, getting a new story, theme and characters each season. The upcoming sixth season, premiering in September seems to focus on the theme of a harvest, though this is not official. The show has proved to not only be groundbreaking but quite controversial with it's violence, gore, and weird as hell erotic scenes – which is what makes the show so great. If you aren't already a fan, then go ahead and start binge watching previous seasons streaming on Netflix to get yourself prepared for the upcoming season.
5. "The Exorcist"
Last but not least is "The Exorcist," the upcoming Fox horror series based on the original Exorcism film, which in turn is based on the 1971 novel of the same name. If you somehow have managed this far without seeing the classic that is film, then you're in luck because the plot is relatively simple. In the book and film, it centers on a priest who performs exorcisms. In the new series, it's basically the same deal, only in the show there are two priests dealing with one families demonic possession. While critics so far are giving the show less than rave reviews, I am still hopeful and excited to check out a reboot of a horror classic.
Film:
6. "Boo! A Madea Halloween"
If you haven't yet seen the trailer for the new Halloween Madea movie then please do that now. It looks hilarious! I had to add this to the list on account for the fall/Halloween theme to fit the season, and because if it's a Madea movie then you know it's going to be funny. While not necessarily a horror movie, I think this will be perfect to give all our nerves — that we've inevitably fried from watching too many horror movies — a break and instead get a good laugh in. The movie is set to release on October 21, right in time for Halloween.
7. "The Witch"
If you want a horror movie that steps away from the typical jump scares, and overkill amounts of gore, but rather bases it's scares on a mix of factual events and folklore then "The Witch" is for you. "The Witch" is about a New England puritan family who is exiled from their local town, forcing them to face the new world on their own. The film deals with themes of hysteria and paranoia of the witch craze and the puritans extreme beliefs, while also letting you perfectly know in the film that there is something malevolent present. I saw this when it came out back in February and absolutely loved it! I would recommend it to a seasoned horror fan who wants something besides the nonsense that's been playing in our mainstream theaters. "The Witch" exudes a chilly creepiness perfect for fall.
8. "The Blair Witch Project"
"The Blair Witch Project" has now become a modern classic, having created the now horribly overdone "found footage" idea. This is a huge favorite of mine, so it obviously made the list. When the movie came out in 1999 people truly believed that all the events that happened in the film and the outcome were true. The entire cast in the film went above and beyond to create the illusion of their disappearances that they went to no press events before or after the film's release and even went so far as to create fake news about the events in the film. If you have not seen this gem then please do so, because coming up next is the biggest surprise of 2016...
9. "Blair Witch"
Yes, there is going to be a sequel to "The Blair Witch Project!" Originally this movie was titled "The Wood"' and little was given as to the exact plot of the film, until it was revealed at Comic Con in San Diego back in July that the whole "woods" thing was just a stealthy cover up for what is now simply "Blair Witch." As said prior, if the trailer to this tickles your fancy, and you haven't seen the "The Blair Witch Project" then go ahead and see that first. "Blair Witch" picks up where the original left off, leaving us with the long lost brother of Heather, the main character in "The Blair Witch Project," having found and watched his sister's lost tapes, he sets out into the woods of Burketsville to see if he can find her. I am so excited for this to come out; it looks so good and thus far has gotten great reviews! "Blair Witch" is most definitely my most anticipated films of the fall.
9. "ParaNorman"
While this one is geared towards kids, I think "ParaNorman" is a great pick for all ages as well. I really love "ParaNorman" because of the stop-motion animation, it's funny and sometimes surprisingly adult-centered humor at times. It's also a great movie for fall, as it has the spooky, fall vibe perfect for Halloween without it being a definite Halloween film. I would definitely recommend this for anyone wanting a lighthearted, funny, yet creepily-cool fall flick.
10. "Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children"
Last but again, not least is the highly anticipated "Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children." Based on the bestselling novel by Ransom Riggs, the movie has been taken under the care of the beloved Tim Burton, promising a dark yet beautiful film adaption. The story follows Jacob, a young man who ends us following the cryptic clues his grandfather left him on his deathbed, only to lead him across the sea to a Welsh island where a mysterious home for children resides. Through exploration, Jacob finds that the home and it's residents are oddly peculiar and not all they seem to be. I'm pretty excited for this one, as I'm about halfway through the novel, which includes various old, creepy black and white photos throughout that interact with the story. What more can you ask for in a fall film than that of the visual stylings of Tim Burton and creepy old photographs?
Fall is a great time of year, and my personal favorite. It's cool enough to wear warm sweaters and boots, drink hot cider and those irresistible pumpkin spice lattes, and it's the time when the leaves change colors, but ultimately fall and leave us with skeletal-like remainders, giving us a chilling, spooky vibe. Summer is almost over, and with that I am ready to get in the mood for fall. With the 10 films and TV series listed above, I see a pretty great season for all things creepy, weird, horrifying coming up!
