Every high school student has probably said at one point or another that they "can't wait to get out of this town." I was one of those kids myself, but after going off to college and experiencing life in a big city, I have come to appreciate my small town a lot more.

1. Fresh Air

When I first came back to my home town for winter break after being away for five months, I was surprised at how fresh and clean the air was compared to the city. I never even noticed how nice this is until being away for a long time and then coming back home.

2. The Scenery

I used to think that urban landscapes were more beautiful than country ones, but now I would have to say that not much can beat the beautiful rolling hills in the country.

3. The People

Most of the people that live in small town are really nice. Even if you see someone you do not know, they are still usually friendly.

4. The Sense of Community

I have never had a greater sense of community than that of being part of a small town. Everyone always supports each other no matter what. If the football team makes it to the playoffs, then everyone in town will attend their game to cheer then on.When someone has a serious illness or accident, then everyone bands together to raise money for their hospital bills.

5. Family-Owned Businesses

It is always nice to shop at locally owned stores and support small businesses. Instead giving your money to large corporations, you are helping the local economy. Not to mention that the items you buy from a small business are much more unique than at a big chain store.

6. Safety

Living in a small town, you do not have to worry about crime. Most people leave their cars and houses unlocked. If you ever run into some trouble, such as your car breaking down in the snow, you can always count on someone you know to happen to pass by and help you out.

7. No Traffic

Living in a big city is great because there are a variety of things to do, but one of the downsides is the traffic. A perk of living in a small town is that there is hardly any traffic, so you can get to where you are going without having to impatiently wait in a line of cars.

8. You Learn To Appreciate the Little Things

Living in a small town, you learn to appreciate the simple pleasures in life a lot more, whether that is going on a hike through the wood or having a bonfire with your friends.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
