College is a strange, exciting, interesting place, but it would be impossible to tackle it all alone. So in honor of the just passed holidays of Galentine’s Day and Valentine’s Day, here are eight reasons why your college friends are the best.
1. They don’t judge you. Ever.
Pulled an all-nighter and show up to class braless in yesterday’s makeup? You made out with a gross boy at a frat party? That’s cool. They’ve been there. They’ll just nod their head sympathetically and let you sip your 24-ounce mocha without one ounce of judgement.
2. Since they don’t judge you, you don’t ever have to hide your true self.
And sometimes your true self is texting memes to your friends at 3 a.m. That’s OK. They’ll just text back with the crying laughing face emoji.
3. You all live on coffee.
Sometimes there just isn’t enough time before your 8 a.m. to get coffee. But coffee is your thing. When you don’t have coffee, things start to fall apart. Your friends get that, because they’re the exact same way.
4. Carbs aren’t evil anymore, so late night donut runs are a thing.
This isn’t high school anymore where everybody is dieting to fit into their prom dresses, and you haven’t quite hit that mid-twenty mark where your metabolism apparently quits on you. So you embrace that! Krispy Kreme, Pizza Hut, and Baskin Robbins are all places you frequent.
5. You can shamelessly gossip about anyone from your hometown.
Chances are the friends you find in college are not the same ones you had in high school, so you can shamelessly gossip about all the shenanigans that occur in your hometown without worrying that it’ll get back to somebody.
6. You’re all at the same point in your lives.
When you’re all experiencing a different version of the same thing, you really get what the other person is going through. From experiencing final exams for the first time to making the decision whether or not to drop a class or being deathly irritated with your partner for your partner project, you’ve been there, and your friends have been right there with you.
7. Their family becomes your family.
It doesn't matter if you've actually met their family before because family is such a big part of anyone's life that you feel like you've met them. And that's pretty cool.
8. They remind you of what’s really important.
Whether it’s a bad grade on a test or a gut-wrenching breakup, your friends are always there to take you out for waffles and remind you of what really matters: friendship and waffles.
So thank you to the friends I’ve found in college for being the wonderful, strange, beautiful people that you are. Because without you, I’m sure I couldn’t even.
