7 Tips for a Healthy Semester
The 5th

1) Sleep well.

Getting inadequate sleep is one of the worst things you can do in preventing sickness. Both your body and your mind need time to rest after a full day (which tends to be every day in college, am I right?). Make sure to set a stable sleep schedule that you can stick with throughout the semester. Remember, your body needs multiple days of sleeping in in order to recover from just one late night.

2) Stay Hydrated.

We live in a culture that has fresh water available around pretty much every corner. Whether it's in a bottle or from the fountain, don't take this blessing for granted. Our bodies are made of about 60% water, which makes water pretty important for maintaining overall health. Try to skip out on the soda and other sugary drinks that instead cause dehydration.

3) Take a Break.

Our minds can't work efficiently when we don't take time away from heavy concentration, such as for studying and other forms of work. Even if it's just a 15-minute break, you'll find that you'll be able to think more clearly and get more done in less time.

4) Make Room for Time Alone.

Community and time with friends are both great, but sometimes it can numb our senses to our own selves. A balance of time with self and time with others is definitely needed. Having time alone to regroup and let our minds wander allows for increased self-awareness to understand our state of being and where we stand in our relationship with God and others.

5) Get Moving.

"Too busy" can't apply to working out when it only takes 30 minutes, 5 days a week. Keeping the body moving stimulates better blood flow, sharper thinking, decreased anxiety, and more. So go for a walk or jog. Do some pushups in your dorm. Look up an exercise video on Youtube. Live active!

6) Remember: Food is Fuel.

If you're eating processed, sugary food for every meal, don't be surprised if your health suffers. These foods can cause you to feel sluggish and don't contain the nutrients that fruits, veggies, lean protein, whole grains, and legumes do. Stick to natural foods that boost your immune system with proper vitamins and minerals.

7) Go Smell the Roses.

Literally. Go outside and explore. Be in nature. It's been proven to be good for you, and it's also an amazing and refreshing experience. Appreciate the beauty that God has placed around you. You'll find yourself feeling more at peace and present.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
