Ohio Northern University also known as ONU is a university in the small town of Ada. We are known for our great programs in everything from Pharmacy and Business to Law and Education. ONU has a small town and family vibe that make the decision to attend ONU a little easier. We are also know for our cornfields and self made fun. To all those people who ask "What is it like to be a Polar Bear?" here is your answer.
1. A school mascot has never been more fitting.
While many students are called Eagles, Buckeyes or Oilers, we are called the Polar Bears and it is truly who we are. We were never bothered by the cold and we are cute as can be. We are fearless, unpredictable and, when hungry, we become slightly vicious. We thrive in the winter and can take down an enemy in one fell swoop.
2. Mac Attacks are a thing—a very dangerous thing.
If you ask any ONU student about a "mac attack" they will tell you that it is no urban legend. It is very real and has been the downfall of many polar bears.
3. You love the squirrels on campus.
The first thing I noticed when I visited ONU was the squirrels. There are squirrels everywhere. Even if you don't like squirrels when you first come here, you will learn to love them. They provide endless entertainment, representations of how your life is going and are a staple of the community.
4. The black swans are spawns of the devil.
You will hear horror stories of black swans whenever you step foot on campus. No one dares to go near them or somehow tempt them to attack. Swans are a-holes, plain and simple. Always be aware of how close they are, swans can attack at any time.
5. You will have doubts.
It's a part of life. You will have doubts about coming to such a small town with a small campus. You will wonder if the major you chose is the right one. All of this is OK, it's apart of your college experience. It's OK to change a major or have doubts. I did. ONU, however, is the best out there. The smallness of the campus allows the professors to know you and care about you. I wouldn't trade that for the uncaring big schools.
6. Friends are easy to find.
Since ONU is such a small campus, you get to see the same people every day, making it easier to make friends in classes and other places. You won't be able to meet someone really cool then never see them again. You'll either see them out and about or in a class. Students at ONU are really accepting and kind. There are always rotten apples but they are few and far in between.
7. The tundra is risky when weather is added.
Whether it be rain, snow or wind; the tundra can be a treacherous place. When it is raining and windy, you are one gust away from becoming Mary Poppins. The wind gusts alone can blow you to your next class in record time.
Being a polar bear is something I love. I wouldn't trade it for the world. I hope many future students feel the same as I do.
