7 New Year Resolutions

7 New Year Resolutions
Kaique Rocha

We have all been there, around this time of year, trying to make ourselves better. We have all been the ones to make a resolution and we failed keeping it, making us just feel bad about ourselves. This year, I'm proposing 7 ideas for new years resolutions we should all have and try our best to keep.

1. Be Healthy

This one may come as a shock, and I'm not saying to hit the gym, or drink those tea detoxes. But I'm talking about being healthy. Eat meals, have an enjoyable snack. Drink water. Your body weight doesn't define you, and if you want to make the resolution to lose weight by all means go ahead. But just make sure it's in a healthy way! Every body is beautiful.

2. Say Thank You

I have this awful habit of saying thank you way too much. It was being part raised as an only child, or maybe because my mom would always thank people everywhere she went. She still does even to this day. But what irritates me is when people don't express gratitude. Be thankful for the guy at McDonalds who made your food or the gas station attendant. This year, let's try to express how grateful we are to the people who make our lives easier. It could be your mom, your dad, your significant other, whoever it is if they make your life easier, say thank you! Make sure they know that they are appreciated!

3. Be Present

There has been so many times where I realize I'm on my phone, or being checked out of a conversation with people. This year, let's try to put down our phones, stop thinking about daily stresses around the people we care about. People need to be heard, they want you to be present. You never know when you can't get a moment with them again because life goes so fast, so be present with people.

4. Do One Small Act of Kindness

I'm not saying to buy everyone in the Dunkin Donuts a cup of coffee, but try to make someone's day easier by one small act of kindness. This can be buying them a cup of coffee, sending someone a text saying your thinking about them or something just as small as holding the door for someone. Often times in our culture, everyone is so self-centered. But if we take ourselves and do one small thing, maybe the world would be centered.

5. Go Out Of Your Comfort Zone Once This Year

We have all seen that picture of a circle that says in it "your comfort zone". What would happen if we get out of that circle just once this year? What happens if you audition for that play, or apply for the job that you don't think you will get? If we stop ourselves short, we will never know. We will never get that part or that job. Try it once, see how it goes, but I promise you, you will never forget how you feel when you do step out of the circle of your comfort zone.

6. Help People That Are Close To You

Too many times we are focused on helping people out of reach. We do everything we can for them, we pray for them, and send them help. But what about the people in our everyday lives that often don't reach out for help simply because we are that close? What happens if we take time to study a subject to help them pass a class, or we help them in small gestures like just simply asking if they are okay or they need anything? That is where the help comes in to change the world.

7. Just Enjoy the New Year

We get caught up in resolutions, traditions, outfits and everything else in between. But what happens if we just relax and spend the new year with people we love and forget all the rest? It doesn't matter about the outfit you wear or which party you go to, but if you are kissing someone you love, then that's all that matters when the clock strikes twelve this year.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
