We always look forward to growing older (not too much older), but sometimes we look past growing up. And on these journeys that we take through life, we sometimes forget to remind ourselves of who we are and where we want to go. Sometimes I forget the smallest of things that could mean so much in the end...So if, for 7 days, I could send myself themed letters from my future self, here is what those themes would be.
1. It’s okay to be hard on yourself sometimes, but not all the time.
I don’t know when it will be okay, or why it will be okay--but you’ll learn that one day you will need someone to be hard on you, and there’s no one better than you.
2. Hard work does pay off, so keep pushing on.
It’s terrifying to wake up every day and plant fruits and vegetables for your garden, and every day you notice that it is barring none. Every day you wake up and wonder when those fruits and vegetables will appear; just keep watering and nurturing your garden, things will begin to bloom when you least expect it. One day you’ll hopelessly awaken from your sleep, fill your pitcher with water, head out, and you’ll see the spouting of greenery everywhere. You’ll thank yourself for being persistent in a hopeless situation.
3. Making plans is a waste of time when they aren’t executed.
Think of all the times you made plans and your plans fell through. Now compare that to all the times that you made plans and actually accomplished them. Were there different emotions that accompanied both of those actions? Making failed plans will only bring you down and waste your time. Plans do not fail because you can’t make them happen, they fail because you were too busy believing that they’ll come together on their own. They won’t. They need you, and most of the time you need them.
4. Time is so valuable!
You’ve heard it before. You complained that it isn’t fair that what man made means more to us than man. You were wrong. Man didn’t make time. Man made clocks. Time isn’t about the hands of the clock twirling in circles forever. You’ll see time progress with the changes of your body, your health, and your mind. Time won’t wait for you to be ready to change, it’ll change you...and fast as a baseball it’ll come, but the twist is that you won’t miss it--it’ll hit you, or you’ll hit it. Either way, it’s coming, so watch out!
5. Money is fabulous and all, but don’t let it run or ruin you.
Money is important, we all know that. If money is the only point of your focus, you’ll lose yourself whenever you are without it. If you’re living life, and making memories, and you know that money is just a thing that’ll get you more things--you’ll give life a bigger meaning. Life needs a bigger meaning.
6. You don’t have to contribute to the breaking of a society.
You know what you stand for. Don’t subscribe to the dehumanizing of a person, don’t contribute to the view that not all people are equal, you don’t have to talk down on people; sometimes you’ll fall into a trap and you’ll have to choose between the well-being of one person and the entertaining of a group of people, and sometimes the consequences won’t be great...but I trust that you’ll make the decision that is morally right. This isn’t a movie, this is life...and people are going to be affected by what you do to them and how you treat them. You never want to have a bad conscious...so do what you know in your heart is right. Treat people how you’ve always wanted people to treat you.
7. Find comfort in who you were as a child.
You were so imaginative! It's a beautiful thing to see the good in everything around you! You have to be comfortable with your imagination, most times it'll turn out to be a great thing! And though you'll find that you've grown a lot, it'll still feel awesome to pretend to be a child again!
While you have a long road to travel, you won’t remember to remind yourself all the time that you’re going somewhere, and you plan on being somebody--so look for me when you need me and I’ll be a constant reminder of that. Don’t lose yourself.
