7 Benefits of Yoga
Madeline Ade

Life moves fast, and it is hard to keep up sometimes. It is very difficult to find the time for yourself, and take a personal moment Most everything is focused on the outside world, and many people forget to turn things around to focus on themselves, and what is going on inside of them. If you are looking for a great stress relief or a break from your crazy life and thoughts, yoga might be your escape.

1. You Learn How to Breathe

One thing almost everyone forgets about is breathing, and no one ever thinks about how to do it. A big part of yoga is learning to move with your breaths, and taking moments throughout the day to focus on breathing is more beneficial then you would think.

2. Improve Focus

It is hard to practice yoga, and getting good at it is even harder. Poses take time to master and it requires a lot of concentration to hold certain poses. Holding poses for a few breaths, as strange as it may sound, plays a role in how you go about your days. How you practice falls into how you live, and taking a few breaths can improve your focus and help you during stressful times.

3. Find Yourself

Yoga is a time and place where you work on yourself. If you are struggling with any sort of life issues, it is a great place to take a break. Many therapists and doctors recommend yoga for mental health, and it is a great way to just dedicate some time to loving yourself.

4. Push Yourself

The more you practice, the better you get. There are many difficult poses that yogis work years on to master, and even then there is always room for improvement. Yoga is something where you can always find ways to push yourself and work harder. It can be very difficult to get into practicing yoga and sticking with it, but getting into a pose that you have been working on for so long, and seeing how your work has paid off is so rewarding.

5. Improve Sleep

A quick yoga cooldown session before bed is a great way to prepare yourself to get some rest. If you are an insomniac or just can’t seem to fall asleep one night, a peaceful yoga practice can calm your mind and body enough to help you fall into a deep and restful sleep.

6. Body and Spine Help

Many people forget the important role that the human spine has for health. If you have a knot in your back or a sore spot, it can affect your whole day. A quick 20/30 minute yoga practice for the neck, shoulders, or spine can do wonders to help put your spine back in place and ease the pain.

7. Good For The Soul

Yoga has many healing and therapeutic benefit lifestyles. It incorporates meditation and if you take a class outdoors, the sounds of nature helps sooth you.

I was not always a yogi, I just became one within the last year. I had tried every sport I could growing up and did many different therapeutic remedies to try and better my focus and calm my thoughts, and nothing worked as well as yoga. I am beyond happy to have found a love for yoga and hope to help others find a love for it, too. The best part about it is, I don’t even have to leave my room to practice.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
