After another final second loss for the Detroit Lions, it's hard to believe that there is a large fan base for the team still. As someone who was born and raised in Michigan, I have to cheer for the home team. And for me, that means I cheer for the Detroit Lions. Now, I have other teams or players that I respect and acknowledge the talent. But no one is above my Lions.
However, there are some traits you can find among almost every Lions fan. Here is my opinion on some of the characteristics that fans carry over from their love of football into their daily lives.
1. We get excited over the littlest things.
Small victories or accomplishments are still worth celebrating. We will cheer and write all over social media about our happiness. This also transfers over into daily life events, or so it seems by some of the posts I’ve seen.
2. We come into things with low expectations.
This leads to us celebrating every little thing. Although we may not admit it, we come into everything questioning the outcome. We have already run through every imaginable thing that could go wrong. Yet, we still go through with everything in life, not fully believing that it will work out in the end. We may talk a big game, but underneath it all, we constantly worry about what is about to play out.
3. But, we have a hard time not getting our hopes up.
We may not expect much initially, but deep down we are dreamers. We want everything to go our way and in our favor. Any sign of success sends us to the moon. Again, this shows that we celebrate anything that makes us happy. We get our hopes up and dream big. It’s just always been who we are.
4. We tend to blame things on other people.
Whether it’s the referees or a co-worker, we have a hard time taking the blame for the reason something negative happened. We just would like if it was someone else’s fault. We don’t like failure and that fear leads us to finding another cause behind the event. Granted this isn’t always a serious or extreme case. I wouldn’t say that we lie, because I know a lot of people wouldn’t. However, we do avoid owning up to some things. It’s not exactly lying, but it is withholding the truth in order to get out of an awkward situation.
5. Disappointment is common in our life.
This stems from getting our hopes up and dreaming so big. Life doesn’t always work out like we plan it and that leads us to being upset over a variety of different things. One of our main reasons for disappointments can be found in the final quarter of some Lions game.
6. We are the most devoted and loyal people you will ever meet.
No matter what the situation is, we will be there by your side through hell and high water. We will also stand there defending you with every piece of history that has ever existed. You can break our hearts and disappoint us a million times and yet you will still find us in your corner. We will never give upMoral of the story is, Lions fans are good people. We may talk crap and be really loud, but ultimately we just love our team. We are the kind of people you want as your friends. We believe in the underdog and those that are seen as “sucky.” We honestly don’t care. We love for the sake of loving, not for the reward from it. I’ve been waiting on being actual contenders in the playoffs. I’m not asking for much and there are definitely times where I don’t expect anything.
But those amazing moments where everything falls into place are so worth it. So, we stick it out, believing in miracles and knowing that we have made an impact on the haters. We run our mouth for a moment because we are never quite sure when we will have the chance again. Every season of every year, we sit and watch diligently while others ridicule against us. But our time will come. We will always believe that that day will come because we have faith.
We stand strong and proud, unshaking.
We are loyal and our level of optimism is sometimes unmatched.
We are fierce in our love.
We are one pride.
And you will hear us roar.
