Anyone who chose to come to Texas Tech has heard some variation of "why?"
"Lubbock is so boring!"
"There's nothing out there!"
We all know that Lubbock is a gem amidst the nothingness of West Texas, but our friends just don't get it. It's hard to convince them to visit because their college town is "so much better." If you've actually successfully gotten them to agree to come visit you in windy ol' LBK, you're stuck with the inevitable of what comes next: you actually have to entertain them when they're here. You have to show them in a few short days that Lubbock is so much more than dust and wind turbines and that occasional cow smell. You start to panic a little because you know that Lubbock can be impressive - heck, somehow in one college visit you were convinced to spend the next four years of your life here - but now it's up to you to show the beauty of Lubbock to someone who is already convinced that Lubbock stinks (literally).
Worry no more! I have complied the ultimate Lubbock tour guide to show your visitors the best of what Lubbock has to offer. Pick and choose and show them the best weekend of their life.
1. Football, Football, Football
If you're lucky enough to have your guest visit you for game day, you've hit a gold mine. Raiderland on game day is without a doubt the best place on earth to be. Get dressed, hit up a tailgate, stuff some tortillas in your boot (actually, they check boots now so you're gonna have to find another place to hide them), and head to the Jones. There's nothing better than showing someone their first tortilla toss in all its glory, or seeing the look on their face when they hear the real words to the fight song. I'm convinced Heaven is just one Red Raider game day after another.
2. Coffee Dates
Lubbock is full of some of the cutest coffee shops I've ever been to. If they're a coffee lover (like yours truly), you absolutely cannot go wrong with taking them to at least one during their time here. Sugar Brown's, Yellow House Coffee, and J&B are my personal favorites.
3. Broadway
Everyone at Tech has their favorite spot on Broadway. If your guest is prepared to try to keep up, I have no doubt that as a Raider you know how to show them a good time.
*Fun fact to throw out while you're knee deep in margaritas: I've heard that the Chimy's on Broadway is the first, original Chimy's!
4. Where to Eat?
After a football game, or a night on Broadway, you're definitely going to need to eat. My personal favorite place in Lubbock ever is Pancake House. Blue Sky is another West Texas treasure. Capital Pizza is a favorite. They have to try Spanky's fried cheese sticks. Everyone has their #1 local Lubbock restaurant, so why not take them there so that they can only daydream about it (and when they can eat there again) when they head back home?
5. Campus
This is one of the most important, especially if your guest is still in high school. You fell in love with Tech on your campus tour, how can you expect them to fall in love with Tech without seeing the most beautiful campus in Texas? Even if they argue that they'll never consider coming to Texas Tech for school, don't ignore the power of the beauty that is Texas Tech's campus.
6. Or Just Hang Out
You don't have to do anything special to have fun! Go to a party. Hang out with your friends. The options are pretty much endless for a Red Raider, because let's be honest, we know how to have fun.
By the end of their visit, they'll be sad they have to leave, and you're left knowing that despite the rumors, coming to school in Lubbock was the best choice you could have made.
