Many college students love getting decked out in their schools colors, cute tank tops and shorts, and strutting down to the stadium to cheer on their beloved football team. They stand in the blistering sun for hours to show their support for the pride and joy of their college. Students at my campus, however, trade in their short shorts and T-shirts for jeans and a hoodie and waddle their way to the ice rink to cheer on our pride and joy: the hockey team.
Here are six reasons why attending a hockey-centered college is better than you think.
1. Did I mention hockey players?
Hockey players break the good-looking meter by far! Need I say more?
2. Sportsmanship is overrated.
What is better than getting to watch a little dual action during the game? The fights, checking and brawls are the best parts of any hockey game, and it keeps the crowd pumped up.
3. The atmosphere is unreal.
Much like a college football game day's crowds, there is nothing like packing into one small roped-off section with 1,000 other students, screaming your heads off, beach balls flying and going crazy when that bell rings!
4. Who needs the Rose Bowl when you have the Frozen Four?
The Frozen Four is the battle of the best four teams in the nation for bragging rights and being known as the best team in the nation. Who needs a bowl game when you have that?
5. No one likes sunburns.
The great thing about not having a football team is when you are spending over two hours supporting your school, you don't need to put on sunscreen! Thank goodness!
6. Everyone loves Mav spirit.
From kids to adults, there is no age limit on showing your local school some love. Everyone is supportive of the hockey team and have never thought twice about missing out on a football team.
OK, so we do not have a football team. But what is better than being in a town where you get to deck out in red, white and black and drive down to a chilly ice rink to be surrounded by thousands of other people? Football games are overrated. Hockey games are where it is at. I wouldn't change a single thing about my hockey-centered school.
