6 Reasons I Give My Greek Friends Props For Dealing With Recruitment

Recruitment week is upon us. It's time for all of the PNM nerves to be tried, the matching sister outfits to be worn, and sorority chants to be shouted. A week full of sister-potential small talk, foot rubs from all the walking between houses, and emotions on high are sure to ensue. Whether you're in a sorority or not, you can appreciate all the handwork and planning that goes into rush week. Here are six reasons I have to hand it to my Greek friends during recruitment:

1. Having to start practice before school even starts back

Those couple of extra days before school that everyone takes to relax and settle in? Yeah, forget those. So much hard work and brainstorming gets put in behind the scenes before the process even begins. The amount of effort put into recruitment is admirable.

2. The long hours

After the hours and hours of practice and finally the rounds, coming back home completely exhausted is inevitable. There are few breaks to eat and few breaks to relax--there's too much to get done in such a short amount of time!

3. No free time

Seriously, how do you even have time to do your homework? I'm impressed. My Greek friends' time management skills must have reached perfection by this point. "No booze, no boys" is a common rule of most recruitment processes, but even if they wanted to break the rule, I don't think there would legitimately be time to do so.

4. Having to buy the right set of clothes for each round

I know some of my friends had to match colors so closely they used paint samples. Matching outfits are a great way to show the unity of the sorority, but finding just the right outfit for each and every girl of all sizes seems to be more of a daunting task than I'd ever want to take on.

5. The chants

I mentally could not take practicing the songs and chants over and over again. I would have them stuck in my head all day and in class. Not to mention the endless stomping, clapping, and dancing that goes along with them.

6. Getting ridiculed

The amount of harassment girls receive for participating in *required* recruitment activities is honestly ridiculous. Gaining new members is part of being in a sorority, and it takes the tradition and process of formal recruitment to do so—any ridicule that comes because of that is unfair.

Sure, recruitment is a headache, but here's hoping every potential finds her new home and every sorority ends up with just the new pledge class that they needed. Good luck, ladies!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
