If you're lucky, in life you will meet a lot of interesting and cool people who you will call your friends. If you're even luckier, like me, you will also find one total weirdo who you will call your best friend. My best friend, Erin, is the first person I tell things to, the one I text nearly 24/7, and the only person I would drive 16 hours with, to Pittsburgh and back, in less than 2 days. Best friends are hard to find. This bond is anything but ordinary, and sometimes it takes a long time to realize who your true best friends are.
Here are five "firsts" that you and your mere friend must experience in order to reach true BFF-ness:
1. First Hang Out
Much like a first date, this can be an awkward experience, but it sets the tone for the entire friendship. Whether its getting half-off apps or going to a free concert in New York City at 3 am, make sure it's something you're both comfortable doing. Baby steps.
2. First Pig Out
Best-Friendship is all about honesty. And honestly, I know you don't want that salad... If we're going to McDonald's you better be getting a large fry with me. I mean, it's what best friends do.
3. First Sleepover
For me, sleeping over is a huge step in any potential best friendship. Sure, I'll let a friend see me in a casual outfit, or a pair of sweats, or no make up. But my just-woke-up look, featuring drool dribbling down my cheek, is real and reserved only for best friends.
4. First Vent Session
Sure, you vent to your regular old friends, too, but best friend vents are different. They go on for hours in the middle of the night and are revisited too many times. Friends will always agree with you, but best friends give the best advice and tell you the harsh truths you need to hear.
5. First Night Out
The only reason alcohol was invented was so that you could party it up with your best friend. Whether you're going out to a local pub or playing a boyband inspired drinking game until you both fall asleep, the first of many blurry nights is the most important one.
6. First Fight
Petty things cannot and will not get between you and your best friend. Sure, you'll fight, but being that you two are going to be friends forever, it's impossible not to disagree every once in a while. Best friends love each other no matter what.
