Summer is just around the corner, which means many of you will be attempting to get fit before hitting the beach next month. I've noticed that many people are intimidated by the prospect of getting in shape, or just don't know where to start. As a fitness junkie, I can attest to the fact that exercise and eating healthy are not only good for you but extremely rewarding. So follow these simple rules and you too can achieve that "summer bod".
Stop Skipping Meals
It may sound strange, but eating less food is not going to help you lose any weight. In fact, skipping meals will leave you with less energy, lowered nutrition, and can lead you to develop unhealthy eating habits. It's much better to eat three balanced and spaced out meals a day.
Exercise Regularly
This is by far the most important and most simple. You should be exercising for a minimum of three times a week for 30 minutes. Try to focus on building lean muscle rather than trying to lose weight. Not only will you still be burning fat, but you'll be less frustrated with yourself in the long run.
Portion
Eating a balanced meal is an essential step to eating healthy. Most dietitians and nutritionists suggest eating a meal that contains roughly 50 percent fruits and vegetables, 25 percent whole grain and fiber-rich carbohydrates, and 25 percent protein rich foods. Stick to this layout and you'll be healthy in no time!
Eat Slowly
Many people often find themselves on a busy schedule, which may tempt them to devour their meal in less than five seconds and try to rush to work or a class. Not only is this nasty habit bad for digestion, but it will leave you feeling unsatisfied after a meal and tempt you into snacking on junk food later.
Stop Eating When Full
If you are a college student like me, you may be on a meal plan. While college meal plans are convenient, they are usually all you can eat, which can tempt you into overindulging. Listen to your stomach on this one and know when to stop.Take Cold Showers
This one may sound a little strange, but there are a surprising number of health benefits from taking cold showers. In fact, there is evidence to suggest that taking cold showers help improve circulation, relieve depression, strengthen immunity, increase testosterone, keep skin and hair healthy, increase fertility, and increase energy and well-being. So next time you take a shower, you might want to turn down the heat.Reward Yourself ![]()
No one ever said that getting fit meant punishing yourself. It's great to have a cheat day every now and then, just don't have too many!
