There's no greater job in the world than being a mom. Moms are typically the most important person in anyone's life. Likewise, being a Big to a Little is the most important thing you can do while in a sorority. Big Little brings so much joy to my heart, and I'm so happy to have my Little. Just as a mom's job is never done, neither is a Big's. Here are some ways that being a big is like being a mom:
1. Providing guidance for your Little.
College is hard -- we all know it's true. A Big is there to help you through the terrifying journey that is college, just as a mom guides her children through life. You know that you never have to go through anything alone when you have your Big there to help you through it all. She will make sure you're going to your classes, and she will pull an all-nighter to help you study for your tests. She will give you advice about boys, and she will be there to help you with any and all troubles that may come your way.
2. Eating many meals with your Little.
Food tends to bring people together for all the right reasons, and the same is true with your big. Just as a mom is generally responsible for each and every one of her children's meals, you can trust the fact that a Big will always be down to be your breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner date.
3. Making sure your Little is always happy.
Bad days happen to the best of us, and it's a lot easier to stay positive in those terrible times when you have a Big that will be there to make your days a little brighter. Whether it's surprising you with tickets to a movie or a pint of Ben & Jerry's, your Big will always know how to make you smile.
4. Becoming your Little's short-distance family.
Moving away to college can be really hard. It's generally the first time away from your family, and that can be scary. By getting your Big, you're joining a family tree that has been waiting to love you. Your Big/Little family is always just a text or phone call away. Whenever something comes up, going home isn't always an option, so you can rest easy knowing that you do have family love and support right there at your campus.
5. Loving your Little unconditionally.
Just as a mother sees her own child, you see your Little as perfect in every way. Your Big will always love you, and you will never disappoint her in any way. She's the person you trust with those really embarrassing snap chats, and she's the person who will always have an ear for you. She's the person who will be responsible for most of your laughs. And, she will be part of nearly every one of your college memories.
