As writers, we all know the terrible monster that writer's block can be. Some say it doesn't exist, and some say that they don't go a day without facing it. Writer's block truly is the monster under your bed: Some believe it, and some don't. It comes out from time to time and scares you away. That's why it is important to be brave, remain seated, and push through the blockage. Keep writing, even when you don't think you can—and here are five tips to help you do exactly that!
1. Change your environment.
Sometimes the world around us serves as the best influence for writing. If you usual bedroom spot isn't quite working out, move to another location. Go outside and sit under a tree. Go to a local coffee shop. Go to public places for inspiration. A change in environment could be a change of pace.
2. Read, read, read!
Someone wise once told me that good writers are also good readers. Where do you think all of the tricks and inspirations come from? When we are naturally involved in the world of literature, our creative juices should flow forth!
3. Buy a book of prompts.
Believe it or not, there are books out there just full of writing prompts. Why, you may ask? Well, to help with situations like these! Sometimes a new prompt will incite a new story or a new direction. That direction could be the exact direction you need to go. One thing's for sure: it will lead you out of writer's block!
4. Start somewhere else.
Yep, you may already be in the midst of writing a scene, but if you don't know how to finish it, it might be better to just pick up and start somewhere else. Start at place completely new, and just see where it takes you.
5. Brainstorm and free write.
Don't be constricted by rules or format. Write for yourself if you're having trouble writing for your readers. Write anything at all! Make bullet points for brainstorming. Scribble all over the page if you have to. Write down a word or phrase and figure out why it came into your head. Free writing is a great practice for writing, even when you don't have writer's block.
Don't let the monster of writer's block get into your head. Don't let it stop you from being the great writer that you are! Try using some of these tips if you're experiencing writer's block, and just keep writing!
