Since I came to college, I made a personal goal to try and get into the gym at least twice a week. So far, I've kept that up. I'm pretty proud of myself for that, since working out has never been something I do for fun. Whether you're a newbie like me, or if hitting the gym is part of your everyday lifestyle, you've probably had at least one of these thoughts.
1) "I'll just go to the gym after work."
Or after school, or after dinner...the lists goes on. Sometimes hitting that snooze button feels a lot better than hitting thirty squats.
2) "Guess who's gonna pretend they know how to use that machine?"
Y'know, it's that moment when you walk up to one of the big ol' metal contraptions in the middle of the gym and pretend like you're not looking at the vague illustrated directions printed on its side. You then proceed to try to make it work a couple times, then walk away stretching like you just got one of the best workouts of your life.
3) "These people are totally judging me for the amount of weight I'm lifting right now."
I definitely have those days where I'm lifting thirty pounds and there are guys right next to me pushing two hundred, and I get pretty self conscious. But I do have to remind myself that these guys could not care less about how much weight I'm lifting. In an hour, they probably won't even remember what I look like. However, if you're the type of person to judge someone based on what they're lifting (or what they're not lifting), here's a pro-tip: stop that.
4) "I hate running."
Yep. This one's pretty self-explanatory. I guess as time has passed this semester I've grown to hate running less than I did before...but I still really dislike it. Forgive me for liking to breathe.
5) "After this I get to eat whatever I want."
Let's be real: this is my main motivation. If I work hard enough in the gym, that just means I get to eat dessert guilt-free. It's great.
While some days are harder than others, I know that going to the gym of a regular basis will do nothing but good things for me. Even though these thoughts pop up from time to time, we've just gotta keep pushing to reach our goals.
