Each and every one of us has experienced some kind of painful or uncomfortable life event; a terrible breakup, a mistake you've made. Sometimes it’s hard to cope with these events, the past dragging you down with negative thoughts and feelings. If you keep dwelling on these experiences, you’re stopping yourself from moving forward with life. You may not be able to change the past, but you can move on from it.
1. Come to terms with what happened.
Give yourself a few days to mull over everything. You’re not weak for taking some time. It’s OK to cry and to feel a little down, because this is the first step to moving on! So go ahead and grab that tub of mint chocolate chip ice cream and binge watch a few episodes of "OITNB" or "Scandal."
2. Reach out to friends and family.
Don’t think that you are alone to bear the pain! Call up your mom or dad for some experienced wisdom. Grab your best friend for a wine night/vent session. As long as you are talking things through with someone and getting help.
3. Have a getaway weekend.
Go visit a friend or take a road trip! While being surrounded by your support system is definitely helpful, sometimes home can be full of uncomfortable reminders. Driving can feel like the most therapeutic act, and it’s so simple. Let your stress fly out the window.
4. Find a hobby.
Keep yourself distracted. Nothing is worse than sitting around and letting those sad thoughts creep to the front of your mind. Maybe start up kick-boxing. Nothing relieves anger like punching a bag for an hour!
5. Embrace the future.
Here’s an important quote to remember: “The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it.” You could dwell in the past, let it control your future, or you could learn from it all and take back control of your life. You are more than what has happened to you. So don’t let anything stop you from being happy again.
