There are several things we reserve for company, but there are several things we should do by ourselves at least once.
- Go to the movies by yourself. Nobody likes going to the movies by themselves, but going to the movies by yourself is a relaxing experience.
- Go to dinner by yourself. Like the movies, going to dinner without others is usually seen a sad thing, but it’s actually a lot of fun. There’s no judgment at all, and you’re free to do what you want and take as long as you want. It’s also quite a rewarding experience.
- By yourself gifts. Everyone is busy spoiling everyone around them, but to buy yourself a gift every once in a while is so rewarding. For instance, be sure that you’re rewarding yourself for something you really deserve. “I aced that test that I worked really hard for, so I deserve this gift!”
- Travel. To travel alone is such a freeing experience. When I first took a road trip back to home from college, I felt like an adult. I had to get my own gas, snacks, and mostly, I had to force myself to stay awake the whole time.
- Sit in silence. Most people are uncomfortable in silence, but sitting in silence helps us grow in self-awareness and self-communication, then we’re more comfortable with silence. It isn’t awkward anymore, but relaxing.
By doing each of these, you strengthen your self-awareness, stability, and independence. Just take baby steps. In my life, I started small. For one, I’m an only child, so I had to do almost everything alone while I was growing up. At first, I really hated it, but I soon grew to love and appreciate my independence and solitude. I loved watching television by myself, sitting by myself, and doing most things alone. By learning to love being alone, I increase my enjoyment in life.
