5 Things I Want In My Little

Even though I am going into my junior year of college in August, I am only just about to start my second year in Alpha Phi at San Diego State. I am so excited to experience rush on the other side this time and meet all of the fall '15s. One of the things I’m looking most forward to is having my own Little. I am lucky enough to have the best Big I could imagine, one that I got along with instantly and is always there for me when I need her. I am so excited to find my Little and I can only hope that I find someone who I click with as well as I do with my Big. These are the five things I want most in my Little:

1. Someone adventurous.

Life can get really overwhelming when you’re juggling school and extracurriculars. But it is so important to still make the most of living in a place like San Diego and to experience new things there. I want my Little to be down to go explore new places and head to places like the beach when we’re done class. I also want her to be willing to go try new restaurants and do day trips when we both have the time.

2. Someone who will open up.

I know that I can talk to my Big about anything and she will always give me good advice and be understanding. I want to find a Little who trusts me the same way and is not only willing to listen when I need to talk to her, but is also able to confide in me. I want her to trust that I will be there for her and that she can always talk to me about anything.

3. Someone social.

Starting at a new school is very intimidating and sometimes it seems so much easier to stay in your dorm room where you feel comfortable instead of going out and meeting new people. I know that I struggled with this a lot my first semester at State, but in the end, it is so much better to break out of your comfort zone and do your best to meet as many people as you can. I want to find a Little who is willing to do that.

4. Someone committed.

Everyone is busy and I’d never expect my Little to go to absolutely everything Alpha Phi does, because I know that is very hard to do. But I do think it’s extremely important to put in what you want to get out of the sorority and participate in as much as you can. I want to find a Little who makes time for Alpha Phi.

5. Someone who can make me laugh.

I know this sounds like something you look for in a boyfriend, but I think it’s also an important aspect of friendship. I know that all of my good friends can make me laugh at any given time and that I can always count on having fun when I’m with them. I want the same kind of relationship with my little, where we can joke about things and have fun whenever we’re together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
