1. Study in a public space
Wrapping yourself in your favorite blanket and lounging on your futon while cranking out the last few chapters of the study guide might sound like the most comfortable way to prep for finals, but it might not be the most efficient. In the dorm environment, it’s easier to get distracted by your phone, friends, or to take a twenty minute nap that turns out to be two hours. Studying in a public space forces you to actually study, uninhibited by the temptation of your bed
2. Listen to music you don’t already know
Listening to music can help ease the suffering that is finals week, but don’t let your playlist become a distraction. Rather than listening to songs you already know and love, explore a new artist or genre. This way, you get to discover new music and you won’t be distracted by singing along.
3. Bribe yourself
Bribery can possibly be one of the greatest tools you have when trying to motivate yourself. Set a deadline for yourself and create a reward. For example, “I’ll get a snack after I get through one section of this study guide,” or “I’ll watch an episode of Parks and Rec as soon as I finish taking notes on this chapter.” Little rewards can have a huge impact when your motivation is waning at the end of the semester
4. Quality over quantity
Studying for seven hours straight means nothing if you didn’t actually learn anything. Maybe it’s flashcards, or highlighting your notes, or studying in a group, but everyone learns differently. Figure out what techniques actually work for you, and don’t waste time on things that really don’t help. Not only will you learn more, but you’ll have more time to spare in the end.
5. Take a break
It takes a lot of mental effort to prepare for exams. It’s important not to overwork yourself, even during such a stressful time. Taking little breaks during a study session can help to alleviate some anxiety. A 15 minute break every hour can make a world of a difference when you’re trying to cover a whole semester’s worth of material in a few weeks. Remember to take care of yourself!
