How to study for Finals 101

We have just four weeks left of school! Most of us are relieved, some of us feel the panic that means three weeks until finals. With spring semester flying past our eyes you may feel concerned as to what finals week will be like. Fear not, for I am here to provide you with some great tips to stay sane and keep well in the run-up and during finals.

Don't leave it all until the last minute

This one may sound obvious but honestly just doing a few hours each day a week before your exam will help so much more than studying overnight just before. You can also have time to send emails or go to office hours if you find something you find difficult the week before as opposed to three hours before you are due to sit the exam. Get ahead now!

Sleep Well

Sleep is SO important! You must aim to get eight hours sleep a night, now don't worry I am also a college student and understand that rarely happens, but it is vital before an exam. A final evening study session is great, and a morning review doesn't hurt either, but getting those precious 40 winks will carry you through that economics exam! Start getting into a routine that will make it easier for you to go to bed earlier when it counts.

Eat Well

Breakfast on the day of your exam is a no brainer but why not start now? A balanced diet really is key so maybe start to throw some spinach or avocado into that panini. Don't be afraid to snack, especially whilst studying. It is helpful for your body to process new energy every hour or so. Pack some almonds, fruit or yogurt and head on over to the library.

Exercise

If you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, 30 minutes of exercise is guaranteed to help. Releasing endorphins into your system giving you a positive feeling is a great way to pick yourself up. 20 minutes cardio has also been said to improve your memory!

Stay Hydrated

Water. Water. Water. And less soda.

Take breaks often

Your brain can handle up to 50 minutes of work with a 5-10 minutes break in between better than 5 hours solid. Treat yo self! Leave the library and grab a coffee or some fruit before heading back to work! Call your mother, two birds one stone and all that.

Limit Distractions

Putting yourself in the right environment is very important for these last few weeks. You may have been in the library for 12 hours straight and done the same amount of work as someone who has been there for two. Only you know this and only you can control this. Book a private study room, choose to sit apart from friends, leave your phone in your room or use the self control app which limits the apps you can access for an amount of time. Get it done then we can all be on a beach!

Good luck, stay strong and make it through. You can do this.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
