These days we are busier than ever, spending an ever-increasing amount of time inside and in front of screens. We see beautiful photos on Instagram of the world's most awe-inspiring natural views but rarely take the time to go out and see them for ourselves. It's summer, it's the centennial of the National Parks Service and there has never been a better time to pick up hiking as your new favorite hobby.
1. Hiking is exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise!
If you’re anything like me, going to the gym is a chore (a chore that you choose to neglect nine times out of 10). Sure, you’ll get the occasional burst of fitsporation because you want to be healthy, you really do, but after a few days of busting your butt on the elliptical at the campus rec center and stumbling around the free weights, you feel discouraged, tired and bored. Next time you're looking for a way to keep yourself motivated, hit the trails instead of the treadmill. You can choose a trail with killer elevation (nature’s stair master) or something more level, perfect for a trail run. Not only will an outdoor workout keep things more interesting, it also conveniently allows you to get in shape and get tan simultaneously.
2. Hiking can be the perfect day date!
Whether you’ve just started hanging out or you’ve been dating since high school, hiking can be an amazing way to spend the day together. For a few hours, you can put away your cell phones, get some fresh air and spend some quality time together without any distractions. Who says a date has to be with your significant other? Spend a day hiking with your best friend! You’ll have a great time filling each other in on the details of your busy lives, ranting about your daily frustrations and making each other laugh so hard you have to stop and catch your breath. You’ll forget you’re even getting a workout in!
3. It’s also perfectly acceptable to hike solo!
Going out for a solo hike is a great way to clear your head. The endorphins combined with the fresh air will do you wonders. There are very few places that provide true peace and quiet, but the trails can give you the ultimate solitude should you choose to seek it.
4. Hiking is not only kind to you body and mind; it’s also kind to your wallet!
With the exception of a little gas money, hiking, even in exciting locations, can be a completely cost-free activity. There is rarely cost associated with park admission, and I guarantee you already have all of the gear you need lying around your house. An old pair of running shoes and a water bottle are really all you need (although a first aid kit, some bug spray and a few trail snacks can’t hurt to bring along in a small backpack). Being a college student with limited disposable funds shouldn’t limit you from finding adventure, and with hiking, it doesn’t have to!
5. Hiking will lead you to your next great adventure!
There are so many beautiful trails out there just waiting for you! Hiking might take you outside of your comfort zone, but that’s where the greatest adventures begin. Hiking will allow you to do amazing things you never thought you could in some of the world's most beautiful places.
It's time to enjoy the best of what the trails have to offer. I guarantee that giving hiking a chance could be one of the best decisions you make. Grab your backpack, get outside and find your path!
