Makeup is hard.
Yeah, you're basically just painting your face with flesh-colored goop and then adding some browns or greens-- or purple if you're feisty-- around the eyes then swiping a messy black substance on your eyelashes oh-so-precisely. Makeup used to be a simple concept but, like anything, has evolved over the years into something more. Now we have contoring, highlighting, strobing, Instagram eyebrows and the addition of glitter.
I can't help but admit that I'm a little challenged when it comes to makeup. I can't seem to find the right spots on my face to place everything. But, over the years, I've managed to evolve some kind of personal style thanks to my friend YouTube.
There's a bunch of self-proclaimed "beauty gurus" who buy lots of products, test them out, review them and give tutorials on how to use them. I've put together a list of some of my favorites that I've learned the most from (and yes, these are in a particular order).
1. Tati/GlamLifeGuru
With series like "Hot or Not", "First Impressions" and "Tip Tuesdays", I know I'm getting a wide array of helpful advice. Tati has a soothing voice and, what I feel to be, an honest opinion on every product she reviews. Don't let video titles like "$85 Lipgloss" fool you-- Tati frequently says to spend your money elsewhere. From drugstore to high end, she's tried it all and willing to give her opinion to anyone who watches.
2. Wayne Goss
So what if he's a man, this man knows more about makeup and its correct application than I could ever hope to. His videos are a nice balance of trends, things he's learned from professional seminars and tutorials. He also has a soothing voice (sensing a theme here?) and he's not pushing any particular brands as the best or as must-buys.
3. Michelle Phan
No list is complete without Michelle Phan. While probably not the first beauty guru, she's certainly one of the most famous. Most people who watch any kind of makeup tutorial videos have stumbled across hers. Even if you can't follow along, you can still admire her for the artistry in her work.
4. Sharon Farrell
Sharon is an Irish woman living in Australia doing beauty tutorials and reviews. As a fellow pale lady, I trust her judgement when it comes to false tanners and foundations that match fair skin while still covering any blemishes.
5. Simply Nailogical
She's not really makeup but she is interesting. I'm not exactly good at nails either so I enjoy watching her. She was the one in the news about "polish mountain" (a must watch). Her personality is so fun and her videos are so entertaining that I once spent an entire evening combing through her videos.
