Going to the gym is more than just "working out", and often turns being off solely because there is a set ideal of what you are supposed to do when you go. Though, on the contrary, I have found how beneficial going to the gym has been for me, for more reasons than just running on the treadmill. So, here are 5 major benefits of just going.
1. Motivation
No matter what your goal(s) may be, physically getting up and going to the gym and seeing everyone else doing their own thing will give you motivation to at least do something, no matter what it is. I always find that working out at a gym motivates me to do my best because I see other people doing their best. It's always very important to remember that you shouldn't view other people as a competition, but rather an example.
2. Time Management
Recently, it's been very difficult for me to manage my time and allow myself enough time for specific things. Not managing my time well leads to incomplete assignments, not enough study time, and especially a lack of effort for physical activity. If anything, making time to work out and be physically active should be a probity amongst all the work and stress, because it's important for your body to have a break.
3. No Excuses
We often find ourselves finding every excuse in the book to keep from going, and when you really think about it, we should be finding excuses TO go! Making time and setting goals for ourselves will make us feel better individually because we know we are refraining from making the typical excuses.
4. Health
Though this is pretty obvious, working out is good for your health, both physically and mentally. Being a college student, there is a lot of stress and weight on your shoulders constantly, and you need some way of relieving that stress and weight. I am not a runner, but I find just the attempt of running a relief for me, because I know I am going outside of my comfort zone and doing something good for myself. Also, emotionally, working out releases stress and naturally makes me feel more alive and upbeat.
5. Accomplishment
Being able to tell yourself that you did something as simple as making time to work out is a big accomplishment in itself. It always makes me feel better knowing that I didn't make excuses, but rather, that I did myself a favor and set an example for the next day. Never give up on yourself, especially because everyone has rough days. Not making it one day doesn't mean you should quit- tomorrow is a new day!
