Growing up, there are different life lessons that you learn from each of your parents. I quickly learned that my parents mostly the used the same values they had growing up to raise me. As the generations progress, there are definitely things that I have noticed that my generation never would do when we grew up. I recently asked my mother and my father the same question and wanted to see their reflection on the topic: "What are five things you think your child should know at a young age?"
Mother's Answers
1. Learning the difference between right and wrong
This is a huge part of something that every parent should teach their child at a young age. Without this, there are many things that your child may not be able to determine good or bad.
2. Honesty
Nobody likes liars, period.
3. Love
Love and forgiveness are a huge part of life.
4. Respect
From a very young age, both of my parents drilled it into my head to treat people the way I want to be treated.
5. Manners
Appreciation of the things that your parents give to you is very important, "please" and "thank you" should be used often by children, no matter their age.
Father's Answers
1. Manners
My father commented that he was taught manners at a young age, so he knew he had to pass this trait down to me.
2. Respect
Much like my mother feeling like this was very important, my dad felt the same.
3. Your Heritage
This one I felt was very instrumental, due to the fact that I was adopted. My parents felt like hiding it from me probably wouldn't be in my best interest.
4. Family is everything
Growing up, I was taught that family really is everything, cherish them while they are alive and well.
5. Faith
Everything happens for a reason, and believing in a higher presence helped me get through so many hardships.
How have I taken both perspectives and applied them to my life today?
As you may have noticed, things that I have learned from my parents were pretty much the same lessons, however today it has blossomed me into the young woman that I have became today. When two parents are on the same page when it comes to life lessons while raising a child, it is planted in their brains young that these things are very much important.
