For as long as I can remember flying has terrified me. A small part of me thinks it has something to do with the 2009 movie “Knowing” starring Nicolas Cage due to a scene of a plane crash. Regardless, I absolutely despise flying but it’s a necessary evil. I am not alone in my fear, in fact roughly ¼ of Americans suffer from some sort of flight anxiety. With the holiday season upon us, many civilians will be flying around the world to visit loved ones. Due to this, I wanted to share what helps relieve my flight anxiety in hopes that it will help someone else.
1. Passion Flower
Passion flower is a safe haven when it comes to flying. It is known to help reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and reduce inflammation just to name a few benefits. This flower is the perfect herbal remedy for someone who faces flight anxiety but would rather not turn to the world of narcotics. This herb can be found at most local or chain health food stores or on Amazon.
2. Wi-Fi
In-plane Wi-Fi is arguably the best thing to happen to flying in the 21st century. Almost every plane these days have it for a small fee. For a person that suffered from flight anxiety, this may just be the answer to all their problems especially if they’re flying alone. Flying alone can be terrifying no matter what age you are and let’s face it; it’s always nice to have backup. If you have an iPhone you’re able to use iMessege over Wi-Fi allowing you to contact your back up to remind you that everything will be okay.
3. Stuffed Animal
Listen, I am a 20-year-old woman and I still bring my stuffed bear on a plane with me. It may look ridiculous but it also brings a certain amount of comfort to the ride that is unmatched by anything else. You may feel a little ridiculous at first but just remember your comfort is more important than someone else’s judging looks.
4. Books or Movies
Books and movies help to let your mind escape off to a different world. For some books are the better option because your mind has to stay active in reading each page. For others, movies are the way to go because it lets your mind drift off and forget where you are. Nonetheless, both of these options are a sure fire way to keep your mind quiet.
