Do you ever feel so sad that you can’t move? Do you feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders and you don’t know how to cope? Is there one little thing that is driving you crazy, and putting you in a terrible mood? Well, as someone who has dealt with depression my whole life, I have found ways to cope. Just give them a chance. Even if they only give you momentary relief, it is worth it.
1. Go to your favorite place.
It may take time to find the place that makes you feel the most relaxed. Personally, I have discovered that the beach is definitely my happy place. Some places that might make you feel at ease may be: a specific park (maybe one that reminds you of your childhood), a view of the city you are in, a library, or an art museum.
2. Eat your favorite meal
You can whip up something for yourself in your own kitchen while listening to your favorite music. You could also take a trip to your favorite restaurant alone. Take some time to reflect on what is making you upset. A bonus to eating by yourself is no one will ask you what’s wrong, which can lead to you being even more upset.
3. Journal
THIS REALLY HELPS. I know, I know, there is a 50% chance someone already has recommended this to you. But, before you take part in one of the two above, write. Write a poem about what is making you sad or angry, draw, let all of your emotions out. Know it’s okay to cry. Take your journal with you to your favorite place.
4. Go shopping
Whether that’s window shopping, online shopping, in-store shopping, thrifting, or shopping in a department store, a little retail therapy is bound to help. But, if you are having body image problems I do not recommend this, because I personally find myself getting more upset at the end of going shopping. So maybe find a piece of jewelry or a cool accessory if that is the case for you.
In the end, know it's okay to be sad and it's okay to cry. And know you are not alone.
