3 Tips For Achieving Success If You're Taking Online Classes
Gina Brennan

Throughout my first few years of college, I was always apprehensive about enrolling in online classes. At one time, I thought I would be missing out on the whole "college experience" if I stayed home and did my classwork from my laptop. Nowadays, I have come to realize that, with such a busy schedule, it is not always possible for me to show up to in-person classes throughout the week. In fact, I realized that, in years past, I lacked such motivation to show up solely because I was exhausted from 9:40 a.m. classes, and my attendance grades were taking large hits. As a junior, I am pleased to share that I am enrolled in two online classes out of my four requirements, and I can easily say that my stress levels have greatly reduced due to the fact that I do not have to show up to lectures every day of the week. With that being said, they have somewhat increased because I am learning that keeping up with online classes is a challenge all of its own. This quarter, I am using the following tips to keep me on track with my new online schedule.

Time Management is EVERYTHING

I have found that there is no worse feeling than cramming an entire week's worth of lectures into one evening because you have a quiz due at 11:59 p.m. Though I have been there a few times now, I am doing my best to designate an hour or so of each day to complete work in each of my online classes so that I may alleviate stress and not have to rush at the last minute. I am also finding that I am gaining a better understanding of the class materials because I am dedicating the proper amount of time to readings and lectures instead of simply skimming over them.

It's On the Syllabus

Giphy

Yes, it's the return of the dreaded phrase we all know and hate. Though every teacher reminds us that the deadlines for assignments can be found in our syllabus, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of relying on it when taking online classes. As the weeks go by, it is easy to become distracted by whatever life decides to throw at you. In the same sense, it is also easy to forget about assignments and deadlines as a result. My recommendation for success? Keep a printed out copy of your syllabus on hand at all times. If you're feeling especially organized, go through your syllabus, highlighting and making notes regarding important dates and deadlines. By doing so, you can ensure you won't be missing any assignments, as it will be at the forefront of your mind.

Invest in a Planner

Giphy

Though I am unsure how I feel about this, this year's planner has quickly become my bible due to the fact that I have encountered so many deadlines with these classes (not to mention in-person classes and extracurricular activities). By taking the time to write things down and plan my weeks out in advance, I am having a far easier time staying organized and keeping myself on track with my plans in all aspects.

*Pro Tip* If you're anything like me (or more of a visual learner), take the extra step and color code EVERYTHING. Surprisingly, it makes a world of difference when it comes to remembering deadlines.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
