When it comes to the journey of pregnancy there is no shortage of challenges that women have to face. Even in the most ideal of situations, there are still the fundamental challenges of changing hormones, bodies, and the stress that this brings. One of the most basic aspects of the pregnancy journey is finding clothing that helps support mothers-to-be during this process.

The good news is that maternity clothing is a huge market and something that is celebrated all over the world. While it may seem daunting to try and find clothing that can adapt to your changing body, the truth is, maternity clothing is not only supportive but cute and stylish. You don’t have to relegate yourself to a world of oversized men’s athletic wear to make it through your pregnancy. With items like long maternity dresses, maternity leggings, and much more - it’s possible to stay comfortable, supported, and look fantastic during your pregnancy.

One challenge that many women experience, is that of pumping while at work. The challenges of new motherhood aren’t just limited to the nine months that expand the average human gestational period. Motherhood is challenging especially for women who have to return to work but are choosing to breastfeed their children.

Breastfeeding is a holistic, natural, and great option for the women who choose or are able to utilize it. However, the challenge of breastfeeding is the frequency with which your child will need you to breastfeed them and the frequency with which you will need to pump.

Pumping during this period of your motherhood allows you to make supplies for your child and this is something that many women have to figure out how to do once they return to work. Breastfeeding is a deeply personal journey that every woman has to understand for herself. Some women see it as a very personal and private thing that they seek seclusion when doing, while others see it more openly and holistically.

Regardless of how you view breastfeeding and what decisions you are making that are best for you and your family, learning how to breastfeed and pump can be daunting. How do you do this and live a somewhat normal life that allows you to go out and have adventures, or work at the office?

If you are a new mother or a mother-to-be, here are some tips to help you understand how to pump at the office when you need to return to work!

1.Start With Your Wardrobe

Before getting into the specific dynamics of your workplace, start with your own closet. Your body goes through some incredible changes during pregnancy, and finding maternity clothing you love is its own journey. The good news is that there are clothing options for women who decide to breastfeed or pump. Things like a pumping bra, that is specifically designed with quick, easy access in mind so you don’t have to take your bra off for the routine of feeding or pumping.

Another great option is a jumper or romper that is designed for breastfeeding or pumping moms. These items of clothing are designed with your needs in mind and make access something that can happen quickly and easily with minimal effort and no need to disrobe. If you go into your work day with a bra or shirt that needs to be completely removed in order to pump, especially if you use a double electric pump, you could be in for some frustration.

Instead, finding items that are designed to help you during this time and support your needs is key.

2.You Have a Right to Pump at the Office

It’s actually a federal requirement that employers allow women the space and opportunity to pump while at work. This may seem like an awkward conversation to have with your employer, but take the initiative and set up expectations for what this will look like and what you will need.

3.It’s Not Uncalled For to Expect and Request a Safe Space to Pump

An employer is not only required to allow you to pump, but you should also have access to a space that you feel comfortable and safe pumping in. This also shouldn’t have to be relegated to a bathroom stall. Talk to your employer about a space that you can utilize for your pumping that makes you feel safe. This could be an empty meeting room, or maybe a room in the medical office at your building.

Not only is your employer required to give you the time to take care of this duty, but having the desire for a safe space is well within your rights. Don’t be worried about asking for a space that makes you feel comfortable.

Conclusion

Communication goes a long way when it comes to this process. Most employers are happy to accommodate, and with clear communication and expectations, you should be able to acquire the conditions you need to feel comfortable while you pump at work.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
