Welcome, 2016! It feels just like yesterday we were living in 2006… a time full of pop divas, the birth of social media, and pretty iconic movies. So what is turning a decade old in 2016? Get ready to feel nostalgic with these 10-year old 2006 staples.
Which do you miss the most?1.Taylor Swift’s First Album- This was the year that Taylor Swift gained popularity with songs like “Teardrops on My Guitar” and “Our Song”. Who would have thought that she would go on to be one of the biggest singers in our current generation?
2. High School Musical- Gabriella and Troy took the stage 10 whole years ago. Which means 10 years of denying the love you have for this movie. A “High School Musical 4” is in order with post-college East High students facing the dangers of the real world… Like singing about being in debt.
3. HeadOn Commercials- Remember these commercials? Happy 10 year Anniversary to this obnoxious slogan that will get restuck in your head for the rest of your day.
4. Nintendo Wii- This was the hot gaming console of the year, where the controller was your playing experience. But this mainly led to creating weird Mii’s, getting in arguments about the bowling game, and buying a Wii Fit that you never used.
5. Twitter- This was the year that started tweeting! Now it’s one of the biggest social media sites on the internet… This also means this was the year that contained a lot of horrible first tweets… *shutters*.
6. Shoes- For most of us, this is the originalYouTube video. 2006 was full of quotes from this video… “These shoes are 300 dollars, these shoes are 300 dollars, these shoes are 300 f**ing dollars. Let’s get them.”
7. Hannah Montana- Oh how different Miley Cyrus has become over the past 10 years… From the modest “Best of Both Worlds” to a naked “Wrecking Ball”, Cyrus has been in our lives for a decade.
8. "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley- This song was everywhere in 2006. Every time you turned on the radio, it was on. And remember when you found out Gnarls Barkley wasn’t a real person, it was just Cee Lo Green and Danger Mouse teaming up?
That was a game changer back in the mid-2000's.9. Death of Steve Irwin- This was the death that shocked the world. The famous Crocodile Hunter was killed by a sting ray.
10. Dick in a Box- This was just the start to the Lonely Island’s long stream of songs that defined the late 2000’s. Timberlake was fresh off his hit “SexyBack” and the world refell in love with him during this music video for “Saturday Night Live”.
11. Time Magazine Man of the Year- Time Magazine famously made their Man of the Year “You”. A cop out or something the men of the world deserve? 10 years later and that’s still for you to decide.
12. "Fergalicious" by Fergie- Admit that this song is still on a playlist of yours somewhere. This song brought together repetitive spelling, milky Coco Puffs, and Spanish. What else do you need? (Heyyyy, Stacy!)
13. Dick Chaney Hunting Incident- 2006 was the year that Vice President Chaney accidently shot Harry Whittington when on a quail hunt. This not only hurt Chaney’s popularity throughout the country but will live on as one of the craziest accidents in White House history.
14. "Borat"- This was the first outlandish mockumentary movie from Sasha Baron Cohen that the world fell in love with. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing “Very nice!”.
15. "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield- This is still one of the best songs to blast in the car. And when the choir comes in at the end… Say no more.
16. Evolution of Dance- This is another YouTube video that is considered a classic on the internet. This video of a man dancing through the decades is one of the most viewed clips of all time.
17. "She’s The Man"- Ah, Amanda Bynes before she had her breakdown. This movie introduced most of us to Channing Tatum and confirmed that Amanda Bynes could still be hysterical after “The Amanda Show” ended. A tween movie for the ages.
18. "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter- This song was EVERYWHERE. Towards the end of it’s run on the radio you started to have a bad day once you heard it. And they played it after eliminations during “American Idol”. Where is Daniel Powter now? This 1-Hit-Wonder is still having a bad day…
19. World Cup Headbutt- What’s bigger than the World Cup final? France’s Zinedine Zidane head-butting Italy’s Marco Materazzi in the middle of the match. This was the head-butt heard around the world and still lives on in soccer infamy.
20. SexyBack- JT came back strong this year with his album “FutureSex/LoveSounds” and his hit single SexyBack was a jam for all ages. This song is still being played at parties and on the radio. Thank God.
21. "Chicken Noodle Soup" by DJ Webstar- Chicken noodle soup, chicken noodle soup, chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side! Hard to believe we have been letting it rain and clearing it out for 10 whole years.
22. "30 Rock"- Tina Fey has been gracing our TV screens for more than a decade with “Saturday Night Live”, but this was her solo project that made her a favorite at award shows. 10 years of Tracy Jordan slapping his stomach, Alec Baldwin drinking whiskey, and Kenneth the Page being a… Robot?
23. "Step Up"- 2006 was a big year for Channing Tatum! “Step Up” followed “She’s the Man” and confirmed that this girl-favorite actor was here to stay… And he’s just as big now in 2016!
24."Here We Go Again" by OK Go- This is the treadmill music video that everyone fell in love with. We haven’t heard much from the band behind this video since, but this video still belongs in the 2006 vault.
25. "Snakes on a Plane" - All I need to say for this 2006 classic… “I am sick and tired of these motherf**king snakes, on this motherf**king plane!”
