22 Signs You’re Colombiano

Any Hispanic can spot a Colombian just by one simple act. It will never be something to be ashamed of being, and I (as well as every Colombian, I'm sure) will forever be proud of being from such a beautiful place. Here are a couple of ways you can spot a Colombian and some reminders for Colombianos or Colombianas everywhere to appreciate how great it is to be from Colombia.

1. Your abuelita serves you boatloads of delicious food and still thinks it isn't enough.

No words.

2. When people ask you where something is, you point with your lips.

Your friends learn to understand this gesture, it's really the easiest way to point.

3. You greet your 30+ family members with a kiss on the cheek.

Every. Single. One of them.

4. When your dad whips out the guacharaca, you know it's about to get lit.

It just makes every song so much better!

5. Caldo de papa and agua de panela are your best friends when you’re sick.

Mami, if you're reading this, caldito de papa and agua de panela is what I want Christmas morning, pretty please.

6. Along with that, chocolate con queso is amazing with pan de bono.

You've never been so grateful for being Colombian until you see this in front of you in the morning.

7. Say señora or señor or prepare for a cachetada.

Happened to me one or twice...

8. We have the best coffee. Period.

9. Vicks VapoRub.

You know exactly what I’m talking about.

10. "Sabados Felices" was the show to watch, not "Sabado Gigante."

They basically became a part of your family.

11. There’s always salsa music playing in your house.

Because of this, you know almost every famous salsa artist and song. You should recognize him.

12. Reading the novena is one of your favorite parts of Christmas.

Singing the songs in it is fun and all of the Spanish Christmas songs are even better. Like Mi Burrito Sabanero and every other vallancico.

13. Growing up, you aspired to one day be on a chiva because the parties look awesome.

Now that I'm older, I'm so excited to go back to Colombia and finally experience this.

14. Diminutives make up 90 percent of your vocabulary.

From your parents calling you nenita, hijita, hijito, or when they’re annoyed, fastidiositos, -ito is added to every word because it’s just what we do.

16. It's Colombia, not Columbia.

No picture necessary, just get it right, please. (All Colombians are begging.)

17. You find any excuse to wear your Colombian jersey.

But you're most excited to wear it when Colombia plays.

18. When your parents come back with these from Colombia, you know your month is going to be amazing.

Honestly, nothing compares to a Chocoramo. Please tell me something that tastes better. Actually, don't, cause it probably doesn't.

19. When you visit Colombia, you’re woken up by these people.

Yelling is an understatement. The words "Aguacate!" and "Tamales!" echo in my ears, as I remember being in Colombia experiencing this.

20. Guaro is all adults drink at parties, and Aguila of course.

21. You’ve been called a coke addict/dealer a thousand times (even though you aren't one), and people still think that joke is original.

Thanks, buddy.

22. You love Colombia more than you love anything in the world.

There is nothing in the world that will ever change that.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
