The airing of the 2016 Rio Olympics is finally here as we had waited four years to witness this event held in Rio de Janerio, the second largest city in Brazil. The airing of the long awaited event started at 7:30 p.m. eastern time and it kind of started off very slow. As it started with clips of an over looking of different places in Brazil as we looked over people playing futbol, swimming, running, and even seeing the forest as a person hang glides over the vast green. It then cut to the arena where the performances had taken place. I was confused at first at what was happening, as people dressed in shiny silver material holding silver blankets make weird patterns to reveal a tree in the center and then a countdown. It was after the countdown that things started to get interesting. They showed the progressing history of how modern Brazil was made today. One thing that caught my attention in the beginning stages of the history of Brazil was that the commentators said that at one part they were showing the immigrants coming to Brazil.
I had to mentally pause on their choice of words as I thought to myself, don't you mean people coming to colonize the already existing land that is being taken away by whites...but I digress. It was soon made up with me when I saw darker people move unto to the arena with crowns on their heads and they are all holding to poles pushing them up and down with the sounds of chains rattling. They address that Brazil was a big part of the slave trade and how Africans had also contributed a big part to the Brazilian culture such as, food, music, and dancing. It then talked about the immigration of other races like Asians that had contributed to the culture. My favorite part of the history would be when the buildings seem to pop up from the ground and people are jumping form building to building in red clothing and then going into parkour.
Then the famous model,Gisele Bundchen, had walked her final catwalk of her career which was the longest. As Bundchen strutted her way down the arena in a flawless silver dress that showed her amazing legs, as people cheered and a big smile appeared on her face. It then proceeded to some live singing by a rapper and an old school singer, There was also a very well known woman singer who they consider the Brazilian Tina Turner, which she had the while Tina Turner vibe. My favorite of the singers would be the 12-year-old rapper that raps about sexism. I found that very interesting and I hope her career excels in spreading the word.
They also addressed the issue of division between the world as they seen the high tensions in America and shown through people in separated boxes wearing different colors. However the most touching message was the message of climate control. They showed a clip of how the earth has heated up from the recent years from the CO2 causing global warming, It showed that if it continues the sea level will rise and the coastline cities will suffer such as, Rio de Janerio and Florida. They had made a promise that every country that passes by in the parade will be planting a seed that will be placed at Athlete's forest.
Then the parade of nations had proceeded and they all had a tree which they will plant at the Athlete's forest. As the U.S. came around for the parade all cameras were on them. As Michael Phelps carried the flag for the first time and also participating in his first opening. Other athletes such as, Carmelo Anthony and Kyle Irving were spotted in the parade. However, a standing ovation was towards the first refugee Olympic team consisting of 16 people. The crowd went wild as the supported the refugees and oh yea, this other man had a huge response due to his oiled up muscular chest.
The Rio Olympics closed off with a Samba party like we were in a carnival. Fireworks exploded and the famous Olympic ring was shown, and the torch was lit. Rio did a decent job of addressing the environment and honing in their own Brazilian flair. Now on to the events! GO USA!
