Why The 2000s Were Actually Kind Of Rad

Why The 2000s Were Actually Kind Of Rad

Avril Lavinge

Ah, you may love Canada for giving us Justin Bieber and Drake, but before them, Canada gave us a 2000s great: Avril Lavigne. She had all tween girls jammin' out to Sk8r Boi on the way to the mall with their gal pals. Not only a catchy tune but also a good moral lesson on how you shouldn't reject someone based on looks, because they may become a famous rockstar. Her music wasn't the only thing that made her pure 2000s awesome, she also had some pretty kick-a** style choices. Between the wrist sweatbands, loose neck ties, and army print cargo pants, no one knew which item to steal from their brother's clothes to rock every morning.

Myspace

Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are all the rage now, sure. The 2000s gave us something way cooler: MySpace. This social media site had it all; you were able to show your individuality by pimping out your own page. If I could go back to the time to when a playlist of my favorite songs would show proudly right next to my avatar (a mirror selfie including neon green shutter shades, a peace sign, and sideways duck lips) I would in a heartbeat. Not to mention the hours you would spend perfecting your layout and using the funniest, most unique "bumper stickers" to really capture who you are as a person.

Like this gem:

And this totally not generic Hello Kitty layout:

Weird Celebrity Couples

Celebrities were definitely not afraid to show a TON of skin in the early 2000s. Maybe that's why they couldn't keep their hands off of each other. Celeb couples were so weird back then! Sure, you remember Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears together, but the 2000s were a magical time for weird matches to be made. Don't take my word for it, though, take a look and see for yourself:

Brittany Murphy and Ashton Kutcher (October 2002- April 2003)

Jennifer Lopez and P. Diddy (Late 1999-2001)

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Gosling (2002-2003)

Owen Wilson and Sheryl Crow (unspecified, but still really weird)

I know, I know. SO MUCH NO.

Airbrushed anything

Now, I don't know if I can get more 2000s than this. One word: airbrush. Now, hear me out; you're at the fair, and there are all these booths selling things like weird folk music CDs and children's toys, but past those are the holy grail of them all: airbrush accessories. How fresh would it be to spend $25 on a 50 cent neon trucker hat with your name airbrushed across the top in some dope design you thought up while waiting in line? If you were a bit older during this glorious era, you might have taken your honey to get some matching sweaters, and if your relationship was serious enough, you probably even got each others' last names on the back.

Nothing would make me want to become a bridesmaid more than this:

I'm sure Ryan and Nissa are still happily in love somewhere:

Grillz

Taking a deeper look into fashion trends we find another totally 2000s trend; Grillz. Some might even argue that they are still in style (I'm looking at you, Kylie Jenner). For those of you that don't know, a Grill is basically a blinged-out retainer. They came in silver and gold, often encrusted with jewels of your choosing. You may have heard of them through Nelly his "whole top diamond, and the bottom row's gold." But I would think that he might have gotten into a little hot water after telling everyone to "rob the jewelry store" so they make you a grill.

Nelly made middle schoolers everywhere more comfortable by wearing this:

While they were wearing this:

Where's his humanitarian award?

Thanks for hopping in my time machine back to the 2000s. I only scraped the surface of some pretty funny trends that only happened 10+ years ago. One quick Google search will supply you with hours of entertainment, so go for it!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
