Don't get me wrong, apologies are vital in life. There are situations where we are supposed to and are expected to say sorry. But on the other hand, there are some situations where apologies are unnecessary. Therefore, while reflecting upon scenarios where people seem to say sorry far too often than not, I compiled a list of 20 things that do not call for an apology.
1. Dancing in public ... even if you're terrible.
Who cares. Yes, people may stare, but people don't care as much as you think they do. Let them judge if they want, but you're just having fun ... and rightfully so.
2. Suffering from a mental illness.
Not everyone understands what it is like to suffer from a mental illness, such as anxiety or depression. At times that lack of understanding from many often causes frustration. But no one should feel bad for acting a certain way due to a circumstance that is very difficult to control.
3. Wanting to be alone.
Don't feel like going out with all your friends? Don't really feel like hanging out in the living room chatting with your roommates? That's perfectly okay. Some people are simply more introverted than others. Even if you aren't introverted in the slightest way, it is okay to take a little break from socializing every now and then.
4. Allowing someone to do a favor for you.
If someone agrees to helping you out, or offers help, don't apologize for their voluntary act of kindness.
5. Expressing the truth even when it's tough to hear/say.
The truth can hurt, but it can also set you free. Speak your mind and never apologize for having a voice. It's a gift.
6. Saying no to someone.
Attention all people-pleasers: This can vary from any different situation -- whether you don't want to accept a certain invitation, or can't do a favor for someone due to personal obligations ... it's okay to say no. You should be able to put yourself first.
7. Binge watching Netflix.
We all have that one show on Netflix that is our guiltiest pleasure. Don't be embarrassed for wanting to stay home all day and finish the season already. That's what Netflix is for anyway, right?
8. Not texting someone back.
Whether you're not responding to prove a point or not responding because you are busy/forgot ... that's completely fine.
9. Eating like you haven't been fed in weeks.
It's good to have manners but it's also nice to completely pig out and not care what anyone thinks while doing it.
10. Being moody because it's that time of the month.
Ladies, you know what I'm referring to. To anyone who gets offended by our moodiness during that time of the month: seriously, we can't always control it!
11. Blasting music.
It may be obnoxious to others and your parents may keep reminding you about your hearing deficit, but the volume to which you choose to listen to your music is your own preference. Just remain mindful and blast it where you can.
12. Double-texting.
You're not being a bother if you send more than one text. Don't blow up the person's phone, (even though we all have that one person who we do that to) but also don't feel bad for sending another text. It's not that big of a deal.
13. Trying to move on.
Especially in college, where dating is so rampant, people are breaking up/getting together constantly. You can't feel bad about moving on even if the other person hasn't. It may be hard, but understand that everyone's journey is completely different.
14. Posting too many pictures on Instagram.
To the people who complain about those who double post or have rules about when you can post: either delete your Instagram or delete all your followers so no one can annoy you.
15. Being stressed out.
You may not be in the best mood and you have a lot going on in your life/on your plate. If you are not being yourself for whatever reason, you don't owe anyone an apology for that. It's okay to not be okay. Besides- I've yet to meet someone that is perfectly okay 24/7.
16. Having too many obligations.
You're a busy person and that's that. Obligations are obligations and people have to understanding and not take things personally.
17. Not wearing makeup.
Honestly, wearing no makeup is better than your face appearing as if someone painted and sculpted it.
18. Talking too much/talking too little.
Some people can't seem to shut up and some people are so quiet that you question whether or not they have a pulse ... and that's okay.
19. Being confident.
Sometimes people get threatened/intimidated by others' confidence. Don't feel bad for loving who you are and not caring about what others think. Just keep in mind that there is a difference between being cocky and confident. Remain humble.
20. Having morals.
Your values and beliefs are what define you. They don't always resonate with everyone else's, but if they did, the uniformity would get kind of boring. Don't you think?
