20 Odd Things Us Girls Are Thankful For

We may have never appreciated them before, but now we will.

As Thanksgiving is approaching, most of us find ourselves reflecting on everything in our lives we're thankful for. This usually involves nonmaterialistic things, such as family members, friends, our jobs and accomplishments, values, etc. And while I and all of you I'm sure are extremely grateful for these things, I'd like to switch it up and talk about the "odd" things in which we are thankful for, the things we don't really realize we're thankful for until said out loud. So here it goes.

1. Chocolate.

This has saved us many times. Whether it's a chocolate cake, chocolate cookies, or literally a spoonful of chocolate frosting, this is our go to snack during times of heartbreak or serious PMS.

2. Dry Shampoo.

You: "Yeah... I haven't showered in three days. Your friend: "Seriously? I couldn't even tell!" This is when you look up to the heavens and graciously thank God for the invention of dry shampoo.

3. Filled in eyebrows.

Honestly, we all love having our eyebrows done. We aspire to get the perfect shape and have them colored in just right. And when we don't have eyebrows on, we kind of feel like aliens (or maybe that's just me?).

4. Starbucks.

Coffee to get us through our day or flavored ice teas just because; we embrace the cliche, because naturally most us really do love Starbucks.

5. Instagram dog accounts.

Try and tell me you have never endlessly scrolled through a dogs Instagram account and felt instant joy...I bet you can't. My personal favorite is Doug The Pug as he is featured here in all his glory.

6. Elderly Couples.

Because of these adorable long lasting couples, it instills hope in us that we may not all be single forever. So we thank them for keeping alive our hopes for a storybook romance.

7. Yoga pants.

I literally felt blessed when a style was created that not only allowed you to be comfy, but also allowed your butt to look good at the same time! Now we can be cozy and not look like total bums. I don't know about you ladies, but that is something I am thankful for.

8. Not feeling obliged to shave during Winter.

No matter how much we need to shave our legs, I feel like it's a universal rule that it's acceptable to go a while without doing so during the Winter months. No one's going to be seeing them anyway and even if you do have a significant other, I think they can find a way to not expect you to shave daily.

9. Horoscopes.

I'm pretty thankful that I can amuse myself by reading about my potential love life and future career aspirations, even though it's probably not even remotely accurate.

10. Online shopping.

How convenient that you can shop from the comfort of your own bed! You can literally look like a hot mess but still get all your shopping done and that my friends, is fabulous.

11. Deodorant.

A world without deodorant is a world I do not want to imagine. Not only am I thankful us ladies have it, but the men too. Can you imagine the smell of a bunch of guys after a football practice with no deodorant? I certainly don't want to.

12. Contour Kits.

Let's face it, this has become a way of life. Contouring your face and applying that bronzer or highlighter makes you feel that much more ready for your day.

13. Work out playlists.

Making a work out playlist with the perfect, hyped up songs is not the easiest thing in the world. So having playlists perfectly laid out for me that I can select on Spotify, Pandora, or whatever personally makes me pretty happy.

14. The return of mom jeans.

Mom jeans, like yoga pants, are also comfy and actually cute! It is a hip 90s style that I'm so grateful is back.

15. Salt.

This one might seem interesting, but what do you use salt for ladies? To use it as your training wheels before taking your tequila shots ;) So salt is a primary ingredient in the chasing down Jose Cuervo process (figured Patron isn't in much of our budgets).

16. Matte products.

Yay for matte products! Whether it's lip smears, nail polish, or eyeshadow, everything matte is absolutely beautiful. I swear by matte products.

17. Beyonce.

Beyonce is Queen B to all of us. We have here to thank for teaching us how to be baddies when needed, and also how to get over a guy. So shout out to her.

18. Target.

Target has allowed us to be given a place where we can spend 2-3 hours when we have nothing else to do, and we love it. We go there without a single purpose and walk out with many things, usually some of those things being items from the $1, $3, $5 section (the best section by far).

19. Sports bras.

Sports bras trump real bras any day. I am truly thankful for bras that allow us to be comfy and jump up and down without our breasts flailing everywhere.

20. Adult coloring books.

We like to imagine we're still kids and life is still simple. So what else is more perfect then getting to color but having it be pretty designs we enjoy and can hang up around our room?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
