Why passively wait for someone to turn they day around, when a simple gesture we make can brighten up their day? Here are a couple of ways to be an active friend and change someone else´s day in a positive way:

1. Write a short note to them and stick it in their purse, backpack or pocket. It will make them smile to find it randomly after a while.

2. Send them a funny GIF or Meme early in the morning so they are hit with joy as soon as they open their eyes.

3. Give them a big hug and whisper a positive comment in their ear (only if you're close to them). If you guys are not close, a hug will do.

4. Compliment them on their appearance or something they are wearing that you find nice.

5. Tag them on a cute yet funny video on Facebook!

6. Recommend a playlist that might work for them.

7. Be a good listener. Sometimes the best way to put a smile on someone´s face is to just let them vent.

8. Ask about something they have told you about in the past and that you havent heard back about. For example, ask about that exam you knew they were worried about.

9. Compliment them on their personality or something about their character that you admire.

10. Send them a strong and meaningful quote that you think is something they want to/should hear that moment.

11. Show empathy towards them and their situation.

12. Offer to help out. Sometimes the anger and sadness they feel is just a mask for being overwhelmed. The fact that you offer to help means you saw past that facade and are willing to help from the core.

13. Offer a shoulder to cry on :)

14. Take the initiative and help them before they ask you for it. Knowing that someone foresaw your troubles and is willing to help is amazing.

15. Tickles are overrated, but it is probably the most immediate and effective method to get someone to laugh.

16. The smallest surprises always make a person smile. Whether it is their favorite snack or a short call, people really appreciate being considered by others.

17. Reminisce about the past and some funny memories you guys have had together.

18. If they are stressed, take them out on a study break!

19. Remind them how much they mean to you and what qualities of them you admire. Many times, people are sad because they´ve had a blow to their self-esteem. Dont feed that negativity, feed the healing process!

20. Smile. Smile. Smile.

Happiness starts with one person´s intent to reach out to it. Be that person. Show your friends you care for them and help them out when they are struggling to relax and smile. But wait, they aren't the only ones that should smile, so should you, because YOU are amazing too :)

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
