20 Lessons I Learned By 20

By the age of 20, everyone is at a different point in their life. However, at 20 we have all been tempted & tested, hurt & loved and we have seen failure & success in our life. And yet, each day we continue to grow and learn new things.

By age 20, I have learned a lot about myself. And along the way I have learned 20 important lessons that should be kept in mind through whatever point in life you're at by the age of 20.

So, here are 20 lessons I learned by the age of 20.

1. Travel while you're young.

There will be no better time to travel than now. Study abroad, go on mission trips and take advantage of every opportunity to travel.

2. Always keep an open mind.

You will learn so much more if you are open to listening to others. Stay curious, ask questions and keep an open mind.

3. Be involved.

Don't stay closed off from the world. Meet new people and experience life.

4. Go to class.

Even when you don't want too, go to class. You will thank yourself later.

5. Always wash your face, even when you don't feel like it.

You will wake up the next day feeling so much better. You will never regret washing your face before bed, but you will always regret waking up with the eyeliner running down your face.

6. Make time for yourself.

Everyone needs a little "me" time, no matter how hard you try not to.

7. Learn as much as you can.

Never shut yourself off from learning... you will only be hurting yourself.

8. Everyone is human.

You will make mistakes in life, and that's OK. Everyone is human and no one is perfect.

9. Never give up.

Don't make excuses. When you start something, you should finish it. Sometimes the things that you wanted to do the least, end up being the most beneficial.

10. Sometimes you will be the one who has to make a tough decision that will end up affecting others.

There will be times when the results are affected only by you- your mom, your dad and your best friend won't be able to make the decision for you.

11. Stand your ground.

If you don't like something, don't be afraid to say it. Speak your mind!

12. Spend time with your family.

As you get older, remember that so will your family. Spend time with loved ones because they won't always be there.

13. Do what you love and love what you do.

You will be much happier when you are enjoying each day.

14. You're not who you were in high school.

You will no longer "walk into a room full of people and wonder if they will like you... but now you will look around and wonder if you like them."

15. Don't always wear a face full of makeup.

Be confident in your own skin. You are beautiful for being you, not for the makeup you are wearing.

16. Worry less.

Spend less time worrying about the things you can't change. Its not fair to stress yourself out over the little things.

17. Realize that life is not perfect.

Life is not perfect and neither are you. You won't be able to control every situation.

18. Everything happens for a reason.

In the end, everything really does happen for a reason. Embrace it for what it is, and you will look back one day and understand exactly why it happened.

19. Don't let life pass you by.

Don't "sleep walk through life." Wake up and take advantage of each day. You don't want to look back one day and realize you let life pass you by.

20. Love yourself.

Something many people will struggle with... Love your flaws, love your quirkiness and love every little piece of you that makes you, you. Because you were made to do great things.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
